In the light of increasing penchant for small cars in the Indian auto industry, the South Korean auto major, Hyundai is looking ahead to introduce the next generation model of its iconic hatchback, i10. Codenamed as BA, analysts believe that the new model will sparkle at the Indian shores somewhere in 2013. The new generation model will be offered with options of two all-new engines, petrol and diesel. It is anticipated that the petrol version of new generation i10 will feature a 1 litre 3-cylinder powertrain, which will be based upon the well-acclaimed Kappa series of Hyundai. Hyundai’s Kappa series marvels in offering small engines with variable valve timing that have the potential to deliver an impressive fuel economy, maintaining the running cost of vehicle. On the other hand, it is anticipated that the diesel version will incorporate a 1.1 CRDI turbocharged diesel engine.
Industry experts believe that the new 1 litre Kappa engine, which will be packed within the 2013 model of i10, will have improved outputs despite of having smaller cubic capacity. In fact its power as well as torque outputs will be more than that churned by current powertrain line-up of i10, which comprises 1.1 and 1.2 litre petrol engines. Considering this fact, speculations are revolving around whether the upcoming 1 litre Kappa engine would be either assimilated with turbocharge technology or direct injection technology.
Reportedly, the development process of Hyundai’s new 1 litre motor is being carried in company’s domestic research unit and is anticipated to witness its test mule before the end of 2012. Till now, the auto maker offers its iconic entry-level hatchback in petrol and LPG fuel engines; however its diesel powertrain is currently available in the European market.
Considering the idea of introducing a next generation model of i10, it seems that the South Korean auto maker has also framed plans to introduce the diesel version of the same. Analysts believe that the diesel powertrain of i10 can be produced at Hyundai India’s proposed diesel engine facility. However, the proposal of said unit is presently on hold because of the conjectural diesel duty policy of Indian government.
