Alfa is planning to compete head on with Volkswagen Golf in its category. The company has revealed first official pictures of its new model Giuletta that will be launched in next March in Italy and will lead to retirement of 147 hatchback model. Alfa aims to sell at least 100,000 units annually which is quite an ambitious target considering that the segment in western countries is predominantly led by VW Golf.

The new Alfa Romeo Giulietta gets its designing cues from Mito Supermini that lends it its shield shaped grille and large round headlights. It also carries remembrance of outgoing 147 by opting for coupe-like roofline and hidden rear door handles. The Giulietta is based on an all-new platform that incorporates both steel and aluminum, and will give European buyers the option of four turbocharged engine options at launch -- two gasoline and two diesel engines. The former consists of two 1.4L four-cylinder engines that produce 120 hp and 170 hp with Fiat's proprietary MultiAir technology.  It will also feature Fiat’s semi-auto twin-clutch alternative but initially it will have five and six speed manual gearboxes.

The new Giulietta is currently pencilled in for a UK launch next summer at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. It is slated for launch in the US which will be Italian automaker’s re-entry in the American market.
