Mercedes-Benz, a leading luxury automaker in the country is known to offer reliable radar-based driver assistance systems across the globe. However, as the required radar frequency bands haven’t been delicensed in India, the German automaker could not introduce the advanced technology in its cars which are offered in the country. The radar-based driver assistance systems includes collision prevention assist, blind spot assist and distronic plus, just to name a few.
As the Indian government will be implementing stricter crash test norms for cars from October 2017, the luxury carmaker also hopes that the government will also consider delicensing all radar frequencies. Last year, the government had delicensed frequency bands in the range of 36-38MHz, 433-434.79MHz, 302-351kHz and 76-77GHz. Though the company has welcomed this move, it also wants the government to delicense 24GHz, 76GHz and 79GHz which is important for its system in cars to perform optimally.
Roland Folger, managing director and CEO of Mercedes India also believes that delicensing all the required frequency bands will be a significant milestone for the Indian automotive industry. Moreover, it will help the luxury carmaker strengthen its competition with Volvo which currently has the radar-based technology in the XC90 T8 Excellence.
