Motorists in Maharashtra would soon no longer need to pay in cash while being Challaned by traffic cops. The Maharashtra Transport department shall soon initiate ‘E-Challan system’ that would allow offenders to make payments via Credit or Debit cards. The new ‘E-Challan system’ would be effective from 12th January, 2016.
The move is also expected to increase transparency in the system and reduce corruption. Moreover, the move shall also help in identifying repeated offenders. For those who do not have a credit/Debit card, can pay via National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) within 15 days of issuing the E-Challan being issued. In case the payment is not made within 15 days, an additional charge of Rs 10 on a daily basis would be levied.
As the E-Challan devices have been rented from private companies, an additional charge of Rs 9.5 towards convenience charge would be applicable. Traffic department has reportedly handed-out over 1,000 E-Challan machines to traffic officials. The Transport Department shall tie-up with State Bank of India for online payments. Existing in some parts of South India, the system has been quite popular there. The process also eases the current manual work where cashier counts the money deposited by traffic constable before depositing the money in bank.
