      General Motors Plans to Introduce Alternative Fuel Models

      General Motors has massive expansion plans for India. It is planning to capture 10 percent market share in the Indian auto market by the year 2010. In order to have a diversified portfolio, it is now planning to launch CNG and LPG models of its cars in India. It has invested nearly $61 million in India to set up its research and development unit, GMTC-I, which is looking at alternate fuel options to be introduced in India.

      "We are looking at CNG and LPG vehicles for India and are closely working with our regional partners in Thailand (for CNG) and Korea (for LPG) in this connection," GM India, Director Vehicles Integration-India, Ravi Desai.

      It is also working on bio-diesel programme and has sought nearly 80 hectares of land in Gujarat to cultivate,Jatropha, the alternate fuel source plant. According to Prakash, Head of India Science Labs (ISL), the company “continues to invest $6-8 billion annually in advanced engineering,". "Innovation is the top priority in GM,” he added. General Motors also has a science lab in Israel and plans to open one in China too.
