Ban on registration of the diesel cars above 2000cc continues in Delhi. The Supreme Court bench led by the Chief Justice of India, TS Thakur, has delayed lifting the restriction till further hearing, with a clause that car manufacturers will have to pay a one-time environment tax as compensation.
The compensation could be in the range of 25 to 30 per cent in line with the duty levied on the Centre for registration of the special armoured Toyota Fortuners. The Supreme Court has imposed a ban on registration of 2000cc and above capacity diesel cars in Delhi starting December 2015 to tackle the issue of rising pollution in the capital city. The ban was originally in place till March 31. The case was heard today in the court and the ban has been extended till the next hearing, although the date for the same has not been announced.
Majority of the utility car manufacturers have been affected by the ban. The list includes Tata, Mahindra, Toyota and also many of the luxury car brands.
