The annual convention of Society for Automobile Fitness and Environment (SAFE) began yesterday in Hyderabad. SAFE is joint initiative by Society of Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and Ministry of Shipping and Road. The theme for the convention is “Safety through enforcement and inspection and certification”. The basic aim of the convention is to deal with enforcement of safety and best practices to manage the overall traffic system. Apart from government officials, traffic department officials and industry representatives, various representatives from Japan, the Netherlands, Philippines, and Switzerland are also participating in the convention.

A well designed safety education program is required to be enforced in the country for a low accident transport system. Currently, 77 percent of the road accidents occur due to bad driving, 6 percent due to defective vehicles, 4 percent due to cyclists and 3 percent due to pedestrians. A safety program needs to be inculcated in pedestrians, motorists and cyclists for better traffic management. The convention also aims at improvement of the road infrastructure in more scientific manner which includes improvement of the road conditions and better planning of traffic navigation in the cities. The conventions aims to discuss an integrated approach to achieve the desired results.
