Mercedes Benz S Class Review

Summary

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a luxurious sedan produced by the German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz. Originally launched in 1972 with the W116 S-Class, the vehicle served as the flagship model for Mercedes for over 50 years. The German maker introduced the 2014 S-Class saloon in the Indian car market on January 8, 2014. This luxurious saloon offers the latest technology and creature comforts to its customers. Crowned the 'Best Luxury Car in the World', the new 'W222' S-Class received some big upgrades and segment leading features and technology.

Further to this, read Mercedes Benz S Class Road Test details by our expert.

Exterior

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class gets a much toned down exterior look compared to the previous model. The front fascia of the sedan features a new and larger radiator grille, restyled bumper and aggressive lines on bonnet. It is equipped with Intelligent LED Light System headlamps that adopt their illumination according to the road conditions, speeds, as well as the oncoming traffic. On sides, the sedan sports aerodynamically flowing body lines (dropping line), which meets the sloping roofline at the back. At the rear, the sedan gets nice LED tail lights and two huge tail pipes. The larger rear doors and steeply raked roofline further add to its sporty character. Based on the same core chassis, the new S-Class sedan is 100kg lighter than the previous car. It features improved torsion stiffness and offers lower NVH levels.

Interior

Like the previous generation model, the new W222 S-Class comes with the latest technology, luxurious interiors and spacious cabin. Instead of the traditional instrument cluster, the sedan gets two 12-inches TFT displays. One TFT display is positioned on the centre of the dashboard, while the other is placed behind the new multifunctional, twin-spoke wooden steering wheel. It is equipped with Mercedes' COMAND infotainment system with an inbuilt 250GB hard disc, and the system serve as a control panel for audio, navigation and telephony functions in the car. The S-Class sedan is basically a chauffeur driven car, which mainly targets business class and celebrities. The new model gets several changes for the comfort of the rear seat passengers. It features seven-coloured LED ambient light system, heated armrests, high quality Burmester music system and air balance package which filters the air in the cabin. The rear seats also get a hot stone massage system. There is a WiFi hotspot for internet access when on the move.

Engine & Transmission

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan is powered by a 4.7-litre bi-turbo V8 petrol engine. This engine is capable of producing a massive 460bhp of power and 700Nm of torque. The diesel version of the saloon is propelled by a 3.0-litre diesel engine that produces 255bhp of power and 620Nm of torque. The engines are paired to a seven-speed 7G-Tronic automatic transmission, which sends the power to rear wheels of the sedan.

Performance and Handling

The petrol version of the S-Class accelerates to 100kmph from zero in just 4.8 seconds and hits an electronically limited top speed of 250kmph. On the other hand, the diesel powered sedan takes 6.8 seconds to cross 0-100kmph before hitting a top speed of 250kmph. The S-Class is equipped with a multi-functional power steering, which offers an excellent driving experience. The steering feedback is excellent, and the suspension mechanism is good enough to tackle Indian road conditions.

Mileage

The 2987 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 10 kmpl in city and 12 kmpl on highways, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 7 kmpl on urban roads and 9 kmpl and freeways, respectively.

Safety Features

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan is equipped with various advanced safety and security features including Attention Assist, LED Intelligent Light System, Night View Assist Plus, ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation), airbags for driver and front passenger with adaptive levels for the front passenger airbag, sidebags for driver and front passenger, rear sidebags, window bags, ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic BrakeForce Distribution), Brake Assist, ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and Traction Control System.

Braking System

The S-Class saloon comes with all-disc brake system. The braking system is further assisted by ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic BrakeForce Distribution), Brake Assist and Anti-Slip regulation.

Competition

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class saloon directly rivals its German counterparts, the Audi A8 and the BMW 7 Series.

Verdict

Mercedes-Benz S-Class has all the ingredients which makes it world's best sedan. The vehicle is equipped with a range of comfort, convenience and safety features. The elegant exteriors, and feature loaded spacious cabin makes it a best place to sit and enjoy long run. If you are ready to shed over 1 crore, than S-Class would be the right product to drive home.

Pros

  1. Spacious cabin
  2. Advanced technological features
  3. Powerful engines
  4. High performance

Cons
