Tata Hexa Review

Summary

The Tata Aria was built to compete with the Innova back in 2010. The Aria was a good product but Tata priced it way above the Innova back then which ultimately led to its downfall. Tata has taken the Aria apart and built an almost all-new car on the same platform with their HorizonNext design philosophy. The new Hexa is miles ahead in terms of build, quality and equipment and was first showcased to the public at Auto Expo 2016.

Amongst premium people movers, the Hexa competes head to head with the Mahindra XUV500. If you do not need a seven-seater, you could also opt for a Hyundai Creta and save a bit or if you want more power, the Toyota Innova is not too far away up the price ladder.

Further to this, read Tata Hexa Road Test details by our expert.

Exterior

The hexa is built to look like an SUV and the car's fascia boasts of newly designed projector headlamps, a honeycomb grille and new bumper with fog lamps. The horizontal chrome slat under the grille extends towards the headlamps and the honeycomb pattern can also be seen on the front chin. The Hexa measures 4,764mm in length, 1,895mm in length and 1,780mm in height. The vehicle has a long wheelbase of 2,850mm.

Coming to the sides, the newly designed 19-inch alloy wheels can be seen. Though the overall design is similar to the Aria, the Hexa gets a sporty design language which is continued at the rear as well. The rear bumper, with dual exhaust tips, gets a dual-tone paint scheme with a new shape for the reflectors. The tail lamps are horizontal and come with LED units. A new spoiler can also be seen at the back.

Interior

Tata has gone all black with silver coloured accents to give the interior a premium feel. It gets automatic climate control with a separate zone AC for the rear and third row passengers. The cabin is roomy and the third row allows adults to seat comfortably. The top-spec car gets leather upholstery, steering mounted controls for the infotainment system, electrically adjustable and retractable outside rear view mirrors. The audio system gets a gets a touchscreen display with USB, AUX and Bluetooth connectivity.

On the safety front, it will get two airbags standard and six airbags for the top trims. Driver aids like ABS with EBD and ESP will be available. The Hexa also gets driving modes where you can choose between Comfort, Dynamic and Rough Road modes or just leave it in Auto for it to choose the optimum option.

Engine and gearbox

The Hexa is powered by the Varicor 400 – a 2.2-litre turbocharged four cylinder diesel engine – that develops 154bhp of power and 400Nm of torque. The engine is mates to a six-speed manual gearbox as well as a six-speed torque converter automatic. It also gets all-wheel drive system but it is only restricted to the manual gearbox. The entry level XE trim gets the Varicor 320 engine with 148bhp of power and 320Nm of torque mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

Mileage

The 2179 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 12 kmpl in city and 14 kmpl on highways

It’s a new SUV from Tata and one that has come by after a significant period. Yes, we are talking about the Hexa which was unveiled at the 2016 Auto Expo and will be launched in early 2017. The Aria replacement shares the same underpinnings but has been completely redesigned  and fitted with everything that will make the car appeal....

The Tata Hexa might be based on the Aria platform and possibly have similar lines but it’s a completely new vehicle. Where the Aria was curvy and a bit round, the Hexa is muscular, and in-your-face. It achieves this thanks to the chrome laced grille and gold coloured bumper. Complementing this is a modern looking lighting package comp.... Read More
