      EX30 Expert Review

      Introduction

      Volvo EX30 Front View

In today’s car market, the trend is clear. SUVs are getting taller, wider, and increasingly loaded with oversized touchscreens. Volvo, however, has taken a different approach with its newest all-electric SUV, the EX30. This is the brand’s smallest SUV yet, and while it may look compact on paper, it brings a fresh perspective on what a premium EV should be.

      Volvo EX30 Left Side View

Measuring just 4.23 metres in length, the EX30 is nearly the size of popular mid-size SUVs like the Hyundai Creta Electric, but with its luxury positioning and electric credentials, it enters a very different space. The idea here is not to dominate the road with size, but to demonstrate how thoughtful design, clever packaging, and usable technology can make a smaller car feel just as premium.

So, can the EX30 change the perception that bigger is always better? We spent time with Volvo’s compact EV to find out.

      Volvo EX30 Rear View

      Interior

      Volvo EX30 Dashboard

Step inside the EX30 and the first impression is one of minimalism with intent. Volvo has been leaning towards decluttered interiors for a while, but here it takes a sharper form. The dashboard is clean, built primarily with recycled materials, and broken only by a vertically-mounted 12.3-inch touchscreen that handles almost every function in the car.

Unlike some rivals that strip away buttons entirely, Volvo has retained a few essential physical controls. These add a touch of usability, though it’s clear the focus remains on a sleek and futuristic cabin. The Harman Kardon soundbar stretching across the dashboard, instead of conventional door speakers, reinforces this approach, functional yet stylish.

Volvo EX30 Center Console/Centre Console Storage

There are some genuinely clever storage solutions. The glovebox has been repositioned to the centre, beneath the armrest, making it more accessible to both front passengers. The centre console itself houses a sliding bin with cupholders and USB ports, along with angled wireless charger that is easy to glance at while driving.

      Volvo EX30 Rear Seats

Rear seat passengers, however, may not find the same level of comfort. Space is adequate for average-sized adults, with decent headroom, but the low seat base results in compromised under-thigh support. There is no folding centre armrest either, which limits comfort for longer journeys. Still, practical touches such as door bins and storage under the console help make up for it.

      Volvo EX30 Bootspace

The boot offers 318 litres of space, supported by a height-adjustable floor and fold-flat rear seats, which allow larger items to fit in easily. Volvo has also added a seven litre frunk for smaller bags or charging cables. And in typically Scandinavian fashion, the inside of the tailgate has diagrams suggesting what can be carried in the boot, a small but thoughtful detail.

The cabin ambience is further enhanced by a full-size glass roof, which brings in generous light and makes the car feel more spacious than its dimensions suggest. Overall, the EX30 interior is a study in how to deliver a premium feel without unnecessary clutter.

      Volvo EX30 Sunroof/Moonroof

      Electric Motor and Performance

For India, Volvo will introduce the EX30 in a rear-wheel-drive, long-range configuration. This version uses a 69kWh battery paired with a single motor at the rear axle. The output stands at 272bhp and 343Nm of torque, figures that translate to a zero to 100kmph sprint in just 5.3 seconds. That makes it one of the quickest SUVs in its size category.

Volvo EX30 Right Front Three Quarter

Volvo claims a WLTP range of up to 480km on a full charge, though real-world figures will likely hover depending on driving style and conditions. Still, for a car that positions itself as a compact urban luxury EV, this is a healthy number.Internationally, the EX30 is offered in additional variants, including a smaller 51kWh battery pack and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive version with over 400bhp.

Behind the wheel, the EX30 feels quick off the line, as most EVs do, but there’s more to it than just straight-line pace. The compact size makes it easy to manoeuvre in tight urban spaces, while the steering is light and direct. Interestingly, Volvo offers three steering modes - Soft, Normal, and Firm and they do a good job of altering the steering weight depending on conditions.

Volvo EX30 Right Rear Three Quarter

Where most EVs now offer a wide range of regeneration levels, Volvo has kept it simple with just two. A standard regen and a one-pedal drive mode. The latter is something Volvo has refined over its recent EVs, and it works very well here. In traffic, or when the battery is running low and you’re searching for a charger, one-pedal driving feels natural and helps extend range.

Another highlight is the ride quality. Unlike some older Volvo models which felt a touch firm, the EX30’s suspension tuning seems well suited to our road conditions. It feels plush and absorbent, soaking up rough surfaces and speed breakers with ease, without letting sharp jolts filter into the cabin. Combined with the excellent refinement levels and, the EX30 manages to deliver a genuinely premium driving experience.

      Exterior

Volvo EX30 Right Front Three Quarter

If size is the first thing you notice about the EX30, design is the second. And it’s unmistakably Volvo. Despite being the brand’s smallest SUV, the EX30 proudly carries the family DNA. The pixelated Thor’s hammer LED DRLs, the vertically stacked tail lamps (now split into two sections), and the clean body lines all contribute to its recognisable identity.

At 4.23 metres in length, the EX30 sits squarely in the mid-size SUV bracket. Its 2,650mm wheelbase is similar to several mass-market rivals, meaning it doesn’t feel undersized in real traffic. The stance is complemented by 19-inch alloy wheels that are not just stylish but also aerodynamically efficient, contributing to range optimisation.

Volvo EX30 Right Rear Three Quarter

Other thoughtful details include frameless ORVMs, which lend a sleek look. Volvo has avoided unnecessary chrome, instead relying on simple surfaces and tight proportions to convey premium appeal. The overall effect is that of a small SUV with a big presence through smart styling and brand cues that immediately signal this is a Volvo.

      Conclusion

      Volvo EX30 Front View

The Volvo EX30 represents a refreshing take on what a luxury EV can be. Instead of competing on size, it focuses on compact dimensions, thoughtful design, and usable technology. It’s not perfect. The rear seat comfort is limited, the reliance on a single touchscreen for almost all controls takes some adjustment, and some quirks like centralised window switches or screen-based ORVM adjustment might divide opinion.

However, these compromises are offset by strong performance, a genuinely premium interior experience, clever storage solutions, and competitive range and charging capabilities. Importantly, it makes a strong case for why small doesn’t have to mean less in the premium car space.

      Volvo EX30 Rear View

Pricing will be key. If Volvo manages to place the EX30 competitively against rivals like the BYD Atto 3, and even upcoming compact luxury EVs, it could emerge as a disruptor. In a market where “bigger is better” has long been the mantra, the EX30 offers a compelling counterpoint.

Bookings for the EX30 are expected to commence in the coming days, while prices will be officially announced by the end of September.
