Porsche Panamera Review

Summary

Panamera is a “super-saloon”, in simple words, its luxury being driven on four wheels. It comes from the same stable as Porsche 918 and stays true to its name. Though this car efficiently seats four, yet it is build to zip around the city like the mouse in your house. Panamera was first revealed in 2009 at Shanghai Motor Show and was deemed “ugly” by some auto experts. With “love it or hate it” looks, Porsche was taking a gamble on this one, but the Stuttgart-based auto maker placed it well among the auto enthusiasts. Like their iconic 911, Panamera has also made a distinct place in its category.

Exterior

Though it is supreme in performance, it is not very soothing to the eyes. Especially the rear end, which makes the car look like it has a humpback. When you look at it from the front, it screams “Porsche” but as soon as you travel admiring the car from the sides and reach its rear end, your facial expression will change. Making it clearer, it looks like they have taken a Cayenne, pressed it from the roof that has increased its wheelbase and decreased its height but still has the same lines and design. It comes with 19 and 20-inch wheels, depending on the variant you choose.

Interior

It can comfortably seat four occupants with much ease. No matter how much you try, you cannot fix a fifth person in this one because the rear seats are divided in two by AC vents and control buttons of the entertainment system. The front seats are split in two by the gearbox and controls for the beautiful infotainment screen on the dashboard. The car comes with a uniquely designed key that has the shape of Panamera itself. The steering wheel is bigger than other sports cars of the company with integrated paddle shift levers. Mounted with buttons to control the infotainment system and your calls, it comes with a big Porsche logo in between. Five analog dials cover the space behind the steering of which three have tiny digital screens that display valuable information.

Engine and Transmission

This is where it trips its rivals. The car comes with six engine options including one diesel. Turbo S, the most powerful variant, has a 4.8-liter twin turbo engine with eight cylinders firing in V alignment. It produces 570 bhp, and the company claims that it can give a maximum torque output of 800 Nm. The diesel variant gets a 3.0 liter V6 unit that churns out 250 bhp and 550 Nm of torque. Each variant gets a 7-speed dual clutch PDK transmission that changes gears in the blink of an eye. Designed by ZF, the gearbox has been programmed to predict the driving style of the person on the wheel and change gear accordingly.

Performance and Handling

With company claimed a top speed of 259 km/h and 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6.0 s, it seems to be a pretty fast car, but, these numbers are of the 250 bhp diesel one. The Turbo S variant has a top speed of 310 km/h and goes from standstill to 100 km/h in 3.8 s and 200 km/h in 12.8 s, which is right into supercar territory. Every motor journalist in the world might not agree on its looks, but they will always agree to the fact that in terms of handling, it is every bit Porsche.

Braking System

The braking systems of Porsche Panamera has been sourced from a very reliable company, named Brembo. The Italian company made “Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake” known as PCCB. These are lightweight yet very effective. It comes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), which prevents the car from sliding in case of hard braking.

Mileage

The 4806 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 8 kmpl in city and 10 kmpl on highways, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 9 kmpl on urban roads and 11 kmpl and freeways, respectively.

Safety Features

The car is equipped with a lighting system that illuminates a curve during tight turns. It is designed to light up the direction in which the car is turning. In case of a minor impact, the airbags are partially deflated but in case of a major one, all airbags function at once, which means, the roof, windows and dashboard they will cover all. Stability management system helps the car in maintaining enough traction, especially when it is wet.

Verdict

Yes, it does not look like a usual Porsche from the outside but the driving dynamics are every bit of it. Performance figures are unbelievable for a four door car that offers luxurious space inside. Perfect for long business travels that need to make quick and you can also store your luggage as the car has a full-size boot. Before it was launched, nobody felt the need to see a Porsche saloon but when they did it, they swept our minds with it.

Competition

Super saloon market is a flooded one. Aston Martin Rapide, Bentley Continental, Maserati Quattroporte and Jaguar XJ, all matches the performance of Panamera, and it faces stiff competition from them.

Pros

  1. Fast
  2. Seats four comfortably
  3. A pleasure to drive

Cons

  1. Looks are not so impressive
