Hyundai Elantra Review

Summary

Hyundai is strengthening its premium car portfolio with the launch of the 2016 Elantra. The Elantra was first launched in India back in 2004. In 2012, Hyundai introduced the new generation Elantra on the fluidic lines that began with the Verna. The 2016 Hyundai Elantra is built on a new platform and is bigger than its predecessor.

The Elantra competes in the premium sedan segment with the competitors being the Toyota Corolla Altis, the Skoda Octavia, the Volkswagen Jetta and the Chevrolet Cruze. With its class leading feature list and suave looks, the Elantra has turned out to be a formidable option.

Further to this, read Hyundai Elantra Road Test details by our expert.

Exterior

The Hyundai Elantra continues to adorn the flowing dynamic lines of the fluidic design. The front fascia gets a two part grille with horizontal slats and large swept back headlamps that blend in with the front fender. The shoulder crease on the side profile is prominent complementing the sharply raked windshield and a coupe-ish roofline. The headlamps now get daytime running lamps while the internals of the tail lamps have been reworked.

Interior

The Hyundai Elantra has one of the busiest dashboard design amongst its peers. The centre console houses a touch-screen music system with navigation. The Elantra has one of the most comprehensive features list with cooled front seats leading from the front. Cruise control, electrically operated and foldable wing mirrors, auto-dimming IRVM and rear AC vents are all a part of the feature list.

On the safety front, it comes with ABS and EBD standard across all variants along with dual front airbags. The SX option gets six airbags. Automatic transmission cars get an electronic stability program along with hill hold control.

Mileage:

The 1582 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 18 kmpl in city and 20 kmpl on highways, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 14 kmpl on urban roads and 16 kmpl on freeways, respectively.

Engine and Performance

The Elantra has two engine options – the 1.6-litre diesel engine and a brand new 2.0-litre petrol engine. The 1.6-litre four cylinder turbocharged diesel engine is also found in the Verna and develops 126bhp of power. It is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and a six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The 2.0-litre four cylinder petrol engine develops 150bhp of power and is offered with two gearbox options– a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic that power the front wheels.
