Mercedes Benz GLE Class Review

Mercedes Benz GLE-Class was earlier known as the M-Class, has got a facelift and even a new name. The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class is one of the most affordable SUVs from the German automaker in the Indian market. The GLE-Class (third-generation) isn’t just a capable off-roader, but at the same time it pampers you with all the frills and luxuries. The GLE-Class is available three variants - GLE 250 CDI, GLE 350 CDI and GLE 63 AMG - and three engine options - a 204bhp, 2.2-litre diesel and a 258bhp, 3.0-litre diesel. The Mercedes-Benz M-Class is assembled locally at the company’s production facility in Chakan, Pune.

Further to this, read Mercedes Benz GLE Class Road Test details by our expert.

The styling of the GLE-Class is a lot more appealing and fresh when compared to the ML-Class. This resembles most of the modern day Mercedes-Benz vehicles, especially the GL. Though the major difference is that the GLE has a smaller grille and it looks like the younger brother of the GL.

This Mercedes-Benz looks so different despite only a facelift. The side profile remains untouched with a similar design. The GLE-Class will be assembled in India just like the ML-Class and it gets LED Intelligent Lighting, a feature that isn’t seen on the on another of the other competition. This though is a standard feature only on the GLE350 CDI, while for the GLE 250CDI it is an optional feature. These are Led high performance headlamps.

The GLE-Class has aluminium-look running boards, new-look chrome insert, mirror package, two-pipe exhaust system, two-piece light with lighting functions and not to forget aluminium roof rails. The ML 250 CDI is assembled with 18-inches alloy wheels, while the ML 350 CDI gets 19-inches alloys.

The new GLE-Class’ interiors aren’t just plush but even more feature loaded than before. The first thing you will notice is the large size screen that is about 20.3cm screen, plush leather seats, panoramic sunroof, nappa leather, black wood inserts, aluminium shift paddles. All these make the GLE luxurious. The SUV comes equipped with a bunch of entertainment and comfort-enhancing features such as automatic child seat recognition, heated driver and front passenger seats, COMAND online system and now there even a touchpad also and WiFi as well.

Engine & Transmission

The GLE-Class is available in two diesel and a petrol engine options. The M-Class GLE 250 CDI is powered by a 2.2-litre, four-cylinder, DOHC diesel engine that churns out a maximum power of 203.2bhp at 4200rpm and 500Nm of torque at 1600rpm-1800rpm. Whereas, the ML 350 CDI draws its power from a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder, DOHC diesel engine, which is capable to produce 254.8bhp at 3600rpm and 619Nm of torque at 1600rpm-2400rpm. All powertrains are paired with a 9G-TRONIC transmission.

Performance & Handling

The SUV offers composed and smooth handling. The chassis with steel suspension and selective damping system helps driver to optimize dynamic driving set-up. It also helps the car deliver a very comfortable ride on any terrains. The GLE 250 and 350 can accelerate 0-100km/hr in 9 seconds and 7.4seconds respectively. The former has an electronic speed limit of 210km/hr, while the latter one is capable to attain a top speed of 224km/hr. The car offers superior high-speed stability and rolling comfort. The light steering further improves its performance at low-revs, but it feels less relaxed as speed increases.

Braking System

The braking capabilities of the GLE-Class are strong and assuring. The car gets the adaptive braking system that prevents it from moving backward or forwards unintentionally from a stationary position.  Along with standard ventilated disc brakes with brake calipers, it comes equipped with EBD (electronic brake-force distribution), traction and electronic stability control system and anti-lock braking system (ABS).

The 2143 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 15 kmpl in city and 17 kmpl on highways, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 6 kmpl on urban roads and 8 kmpl and freeways, respectively.

Safety Features

The GLE-Class is first Mercedes-Benz car that won the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) Top Safety Pick, and accolade. It’s one of the safest cars in its league with cutting-edge safety technologies and high-performance braking system. The car gets adaptive braking system, electronic stability program (ESP), anti-lock braking system, attention assist, PRE-SAFE system airbags, intelligent light system, anti-theft protection package, sidebags in rear, active curve system, tyre pressure monitoring system, etc.
