        XJ L Expert Review

        Opening

What you see in the picture is one of the most charismatic luxury saloons that one can buy today. It exhales a sense of royalty that sums up its character, and exhibits the sort of opulence that can only come off the Jaguar marque.

The latest Jaguar XJ looks like no other car in the segment, and strays away from the conventional looking Germans. With the arrival of the latest 7 Series earlier this year at the Auto Expo, Jaguar chose to launch this updated version of the XJ to keep things as fresh as possible in the current life cycle. We drive the mechanically tweaked XJ 3.0-litre diesel to fill you in on what you need to know.

        Appearance Exterior

We shall cut the chase short for you, as you would obviously be glancing to catch the styling changes made to the XJ. This iteration gets a redesigned grille mesh, dual ‘J’ DRLs with all-LED headlamps, revised tail-lamp internals and mildly reworked bumpers. In case you didn’t know, unlike in the UK where the SWB (standard wheelbase) is also offered, Jag’s Indian XJ that rolls out of the JLR plant in Pune, is only available in the LWB form (long wheelbase). Engineers have fed in an extra 125mm over the standard length of the XJ to derive the XJ-L.

Jaguar proudly admits that regardless of the elongation, the LWB version matches the dynamics of the SWB model. In a nutshell, the weight difference between the LWB and SWB lingers around 25kg, even with the 125mm increase the wheelbase factors in! You will also notice the neatly executed blacked out C-pillars that blend the sheet metal seamlessly with the rear windscreen to create a floating roofline effect. In a deliberate attempt to highlight the length of the XJ, the waist line prominently begins at the front fender and disappears over the middle of the car before resurfacing at the end of the car.

        Appearance Interior

The XJ is all about feeling special and once again reminds one of the deviation from other mainstream rivals. There’s a plush surround of pleasing curves with a splash of dual tone colours that liven up the cabin aura. Your attention is instantly lured by the wooden inserts on the huge cat-badged steering, and the chunks of wood used with matching leather running across under the windscreen over both the door pads. Perforated leather can be seen on the seat design that’s reminiscent of certain duvets used in other applications. Instrumentation is now taken care of by a new fully digital cluster that uses new graphics. We noticed that the overall finish and build quality is just shy of the German rivals.

Once seated, you begin to understand the sheer size of this saloon, and visibility over the hood could have been better. However, things take a different turn altogether, especially when the style quotient sinks in. After which, your being able to witness the frequent head turns is all that seems to matter. In the meantime one begins to appreciate the large and liberally contoured seats that offer humongous support. Though the rear arm rest can be reclined, this is strictly a four seater with ample legroom all around. And that said, all seats can be electrically operated, have the cooling function and the rear portion also throws in two foldable 26cm HD screens for entertainment. To top it all, all seats offer non-exquisite massages to keep that freshness alive during the journey (including the driver!). Add to this a boot that’s good enough to swallow 520 litres of luggage whenever the need arises.

What has now made it to the ‘Portfolio’ features list is JLR’s InControl Touch Pro unit. This system now benefits from a quicker interface when compared to the older unit and also packs in more features. While the rear seats can be reclined in an aeroplane style, there’s a panoramic sunroof to give one the extra thrills. There’s four zone climate control, front passenger seat away function (to liberate more rear legroom) and an extravagant 825 Watt digital surround sound system that releases decibels through the 20 speakers on-board.

        Performance Drive

Jag’s current XJ continues to be equipped with a 2.0-litre petrol (that remains unchanged) along with the tweaked 3.0-litre diesel motor. This upgraded diesel V6 now packs in 300bhp, a 30bhp step up from the outgoing version, and makes it at 4000rpm. Torque has also seen a dramatic rise from 600Nm to 700Nm in light of the revisions made to this engine. Once off the mark one needs to filter pedal inputs carefully to prevent any unnecessary show off of wheel spin. There’s spades of torque throughout the power band, and the eight-speed ZF automatic transmission does a great job of shifting appropriately to keep the driver riding the waves of torque for any driving duty as shown by our Vbox figures. 20-80kmph took 4.81secs and 40-100kmph was accomplished in 5.61secs. Outright performance can be gauged by the 0-100kmph sprint that was despatched in 7.69secs, which is not bad at all considering this is a two-tonne oil-burning limousine. Top speed is an electronically limited 250kmph, and Jaguar claims this mill can take the XJ-L 14.47km on a single litre of diesel.

Surprisingly, one would attribute the huge exteriors of the XJ to be a handful while driving but that’s just not the case. The reason behind this is the new electric power steering that weighs up extremely well. Engineers have made it precise and there’s enough feedback to let you understand what’s happening at the wheels. This translates into the sort of poise that lets one tackle even the tightest of urban routes. Add to this the air suspension that kept itself busy by soaking up all road imperfections in a bid to keep the cabin stress free. Even though there is a hint of acceptable roll when you push this Jaguar more than needed, it feels comfortable, all along. The XJ’s all-aluminium body architecture is strong and very light. Riveted, and without a single welded joint, the 100 per cent aluminium monocoque chassis is claimed to offer increased rigidity.

        Conclusion

Jaguar’s XJ makes everything else in this segment look spartan. It’s evident that fit and finish are slightly off the mark when compared to other German counterparts like the Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7 Series and the Audi A8. However, the XJ demonstrates a degree of affluence and dignity like none other. The 3.0-litre Portfolio version tested here currently costs Rs 1.08 crore (ex-showroom Delhi). Today, car buyers have come to ask for even more, and while the aura around the XJ ticks off the emotional quotient of the buyer in you, we think it’s exactly this phenomenon that makes it a hell of a segment contender.

        About Jaguar XJ L

        Summary

The Jaguar XJL saloon was first premiered in July 2009 in London; however, the saloon takes about 3 years to enter into Indian market. The sleek and sporty luxury car made its Indian debut in 2012. This sedan rated high in every aspect, be it the driveability, safety and security features or engine performance. It is positioned above the XF saloon in the company's Indian portfolio. The extended wheelbase added to the XJ offers extra legroom for rear occupants.

Further to this, read Jaguar XJ L Road Test details by our expert.

        Exterior

The XJL is basically the longer wheelbase version of the XJ saloon. The company claims that the vehicle's body is built using the aerospace-inspired aluminium body technology. The front fascia of the sedan is wider and has bold profile, featuring deep set mesh grille that accommodates Jaguar emblem. The grille is flanked by Intelligent High Beam Xenon headlamps. A panoramic sunroof is offered as standard on all XJ models which is made of heat-reflective, tinted glass that filters the UV-rays and glitter the cabin with natural light. At the rear, the saloon has 'Cat's Claw' like LED light clusters. It features electrically adjustable wing mirrors, auto dimming with courtesy puddle lamps, heated windscreen, rain sensing wipers, etc. The XJL is available in three different wheel sizes - 18-inch, 19-inch and 20-inch.

        Interior

The Jaguar XJL sedan's cabin feature glove-soft leather, premium chrome and spacious cabin. The seats, instrument panel, door tops, centre console and armrests are covered in soft grain leather. The panoramic glass roof can slide upwards and outwards. The instrument panel positioned behind the wheels features a 12.3-litre high-definition glass screen. Features on offer are 1200W Bowers and Wilkins surround sound system, 20 speakers, a Media Hub to connect media storage devices including iPod touch and iPhone, four-zone climate control with air filtration, humidity sensing and air quality sensing, cruise control with automatic speed limiter, three-spoke leather steering column, Jaguar Smart Key System with keyless entry and start, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, etc.

        Engine and Transmission

The Jaguar XJL is available in two engine options- 2.0-litre petrol and 3.0L turbocharged diesel. While the former is good for 237bhp of power at 5,500rpm and 340Nm of torque at 1,750rpm, the oil burner produces 271bhp of power at 4,000rpm and 600Nm of torque at 2,000rpm. Both the engines are paired to an eight-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to the rear wheels of the car.

        Performance and Handling

The XJL petrol accelerates to 100kmph from zero in mere 7.5 seconds and hits a top speed of 241kmph. On the other hand, the diesel version of the sedan does 0-100kmph in just 6.4 seconds before hitting an electronically limited top speed of 250kmph. Like other Jaguars, the XJL is a good handler. The suspensions are tuned to absorb most bumps and the large potholes easily, but the low ground clearance and massive wheelbase do need extra care while going through rugged Indian roads.

        Mileage

The 2993 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 12 kmpl in city and 14 kmpl on highways, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 10 kmpl on urban roads and 12 kmpl and freeways, respectively.

        Safety Features

The Jaguar XJL sedan is equipped with a range of safety and security features including airbags for driver and front occupants, curtain side airbags, anti-whiplash technology, seatbelt reminder, rear child safety locks, Lower Anchors, tethers for children, dynamic stability control with TRAC DSC model, Electronic Parking Brake, ABS, EBD, ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and Traction Control.

        Braking System

The Jaguar XJ L features red painted brake callipers with Jaguar script at both front and rear disc brakes. The braking system is further assisted by emergency brake assist and electronic parking brake.

        Verdict

The Jaguar XJL offers a great combination of driving pleasure and luxury to its buyers. The vehicle is tailor made for chauffer driven car buyers. It offers spacious cabin, lots of gizmos to play with and stylish exterior styling.

        Competition

The XJL is the flagship model from Jaguar that rivals the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7-Series and the Audi A8L.

        Pros

        1. Spacious Cabin
        2. High Performance

        Cons

        1. Low-ground clearance

Recently I increased my collection of luxury cars by buying the Jaguar XJ. From the day I bought it, I am in love with this car. The car has everything in it, a sports design, a powerful technology and the luxury that is associated with it. As this Jaguar car is blessed by an advanced technology, it delivers a powerful performance. Good thing about this sedan is that it is available in both the petrol and diesel variants in the Indian market. The petrol variants offer maximum displacement of around 5000 cc and generate a power output of 379 hp at 6500 rpm. Owing to such an engine configuration, the petrol ones produce a peak torque of 515 Nm at 3500 rpm. On the other hand, the diesel variant also performs really well in terms of performance. These variants bear a displacement of 2993 cc and have maximum power generation capacity of 271 hp at 4000 rpm. Not just the performance, I am amazed by the sheer luxury and comfort that this car offers. From the inside, the Jaguar XJ has elegant interiors that are fitted with many advanced features. The prominent interior features of this Jaguar car are sun visor, driver's foot rest, rear business trays, electrically adjusted steering column, reclining rear seats, four way lumber adjustment and many more. From the outside, the Jaguar XJ has got looks that are to die for. Its exteriors can be described as a result of intelligent designing. The sedan is having an aluminium body and is crafted in such a way that it gives a slender look. Significant exterior features of this Jaguar car are adaptive front lightning, LED Signature lights, electrically adjusted ROMs, rain sensing windscreen and many more.

Planed to get a Jaguar xj and bought it on the 8th of October. They delivered the vehicle late evening. The sales team of the jaguar was fantastic they promised some out of the box services at the time of sale and i got convinced to buy the car. The moment the car was delivered the sales team forgot all of their promises and started to show their true colors, firstly we were not give an complete demonstration of all the features of the vehicle, then secondly we had asked for a tutorial session for our driver who is not that literate to learn the features of the car on his own. They asked me to log on to the website to learn the features of the car and then refused to train my driver. As a result of it i drove around in my new Jaguar for the first two days and then all of a sudden the one of the rear tyres tore on Drive, the nightmare had started. First of all the spare wheel given with jaguar can only go for 50 kms to the nearest point of service(Was wondering if we take the car out of town and some where on the high way if the incident occurs then we are the mercy of god, with no options but to take a taxi after paying a huge sum of money for that machine). Then the previously fantastic sales team started ignoring us completely, on my first call we had no response then after persistent retry we manage to hold on to some one in the the team and the response was that we are getting in touch with the wrong team and had to contact the service team. Till the time the service team arrived it was about 100 hr that is 4 days the vehicle was standing at the same place as before, then ultimately it had to be towed away on the fifth day. now the service team claim that the tyre tore because of a metal contact, now i was driving it around myself and i am sure it was not the case, then just before the car got towed away some of the parts of the car were breaking down on usage. Now after just 10 days of buying one of the best cars in the world, i am with out my car. The experience of buying and using the jaguar has been a night mare, would not recommend this to any one and would like to state that jaguar is not as good as it looks, you will buy a nightmare if you buy a jaguar. If any one else has experienced the same problem then kindly post your experience here as well

Jaguar XJ is a highly priced car in the Indian auto-mobile market, however, is worth its high price because of highly advanced technologies features of the car. I wanted to purchase a luxury car and when I tested Jaguar XJ, it perfectly matched my requirements. This auto-mobile has a suave and casual structure. The reason for high cost of this vehicle is because of various advanced technology features present in the car. The instrument panel has been redesigned and given a virtual instrument display, which has virtual dials on a 12.3 inch high definition glass screen. My most favourite feature is an improved dashboard, which features a accessible touch screen having controls for air-conditioner, audio system and telephone. Moreover, the touch screen has a dual view function, a new technology that allows the front passenger to look at different contents at the same time. The superb quality audio system is complimented with 1200w Bower and Wilkins surround sound speakers that are integrated within the interior. The entertainment unit is well equipped to connect various media storage devices. I can also load around 10 of my favourite CDs in the centre console head unit that has a memory of up to 30 GB.
