Mercedes Benz GLS Review

The Mercedes-Benz GLS was first showcased for the Indian audience at the Auto Expo 2016 and has replaced the Mercedes GL. The flagship SUV from the German manufacturer gets an added ‘S’ in the badge with the new scheme of nomenclature being adopted by the three-pointed star. Apart from the new badge, the GLS gets a few nips and tucks over the GL and some tweaks to the interior.

Further to this, read Mercedes Benz GLS Road Test details by our expert.

Just like the ML morphed into being the GLE, the GL quickly alters its guise to become the GLS. The front fascia is tweaked with the headlamps now resembling the Mercedes S-Class. The radiator grille continues to get twin slats which have been reworked while the bash plate now extends further up towards the grille. The day-time running lamps are now integrated with the headlamps. The bonnet creases have moved apart giving the GLS a slightly more muscular touch. The side profile continues to look the same with the flared wheel arches and roof rails but for the new design of the alloy wheels. The tail section has been carried forward with some added chrome and reworked tail lamp internals.

The cabin is roomy and luxurious befitting the added ‘S’ in the name. The dual tone leather-upholstered dash gets a wooden veneer. The AC vents have been slightly rounded and the GLS now gets the tablet-like display screen for the infotainment system. It can be controlled using the new touch-panel navigator with a rotary knob like we first saw in the C-Class and also through the steering mounted audio controls. The front seats are power adjustable with the memory function while the middle row seats can be adjusted for reach and recline. The last row gets the power tumble function to open up a sizeable storage space. Electrically operated panoramic sunroof, electrically adjustable and retractable wing mirrors, day-night IRVM and driver side mirror, cruise control and other creature comforts are standard on the luxury SUV.

Engine Transmission

The GLS will continue to be powered by the same 3.0-litre V6 turbo-charged diesel engine that has been powering the GL350. The dual overhead cam, four-valves per cylinder diesel develops 258bhp of power and 619Nm of torque in the GL and may be slightly tweaked for the GLS. The power is sent to all-four-wheels through the Mercedes 4matic drivetrain. It gets a seven-speed automatic torque converter transmission system. The GLS will continue to get the Mercedes Airmatic suspension system with the option to raise the ride-height. It also gets driving modes to cater to different driving requirements including the Economy mode with start-stop function. Mercedes will also bring in the GLS 63 AMG with the twin-turbo V8 petrol later.

Performance & Handling

The GLS is a large two-tonne SUV. The 258bhp diesel pulls it decently with 600+ Nm of torque on tap, but it is not outright fast. If you are looking for outright performance, you will have to wait for the GLS 63 AMG. Handling is quite good considering the electronically controlled pneumatic suspension aided by the ESP to keep the roll, yaw and pitch in permissible limits.

Braking System

The GLS gets all four disc brakes with ABS, EBD and brake assist.

The 2987 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 8 kmpl in city and 10 kmpl on highways.

Safety Features

The Mercedes GLS comes with a safety cocoon that has ABS with EBD, ESP and nine airbags, traction control, hill-hold and hill-descent et al.

The GLS continues to be the best place for the third row passengers. It is and looks bigger than the Audi Q7 or the BMW X5 or the Volvo XC 90 which makes it a good choice between the large luxury SUVs.

The Mercedes-Benz GLS competes with Audi Q7, BMW X5, Volvo XC90 and the erstwhile Land Cruiser Prado.

  1. Third row space
  2. Overall larger size

  • Mercedes-Benz GLS first drive review

    Desirazu Venkat | 29th June 2016

When Mercedes-Benz launched the GL-Class here in 2012 it was the largest vehicle that they had brought to India, in fact, it became the largest SUV on sale. Now there is a facelift which we would have normally called the GL facelift but last year Mercedes-Benz changed its naming convention and attached every car in the lineup to a core mo....

The first thing that catches your attention with  this new GLS is the face. There are new LED headlamps whose layout has been designed to include eyebrow like LED DRLs. The two-slat grille too has been redesigned and now includes a very prominent three-pointed star. Finally, that hint of premium (ness) has come in the form of a curve....
