Scorpio AT - A performance beast ...hunter of right gears

10 years ago | Senthil Alagesan

      Whats Good

The Mahindra Scorpio VLX AT is a very good buy at the 10-15 lakh price range. It is a vehicle that can take on any Indian road with relative ease and that too, while providing comfort and safety to its occupants. Build is great and yields little rattle noise after years of driving. Its great engine may not be exactly frugal but it can cruise all day in all weathers at sustained high speeds with no issues. Power is more than adequate for city driving and medium adrenaline spirited driving on highways. The automatic transmission has smooth gear shifts under normal city and highway driving and makes driving a pleasure as your left limbs have very little to do but rest. A host of thoughtful comforts like Rain sensing wipers, Auto Headlights, Cruise control, Steering mounted audio controls etc make it a value for money vehicle. The VLX that I own has needed a tyre replacement after 105,000 kms. No component failure whatsoever apart from regular servicing by the dealer. This vehicle can easily accommodate 5 adults and 3 children (5-10 year olds) comfortably and relative comfort (A/C). Driving Posture and passenger seating is very comfortable with no issues despite travelling non-stop for 6 hours. With all the above praises, which indeed could be argued by some Scorpio fans as "understated a bit", there remains a great deal of improvement to the Automatic Transmission behaviour during spirited driving. Services offered by the Mahindra dealers are comparable with most other car brand dealers, but there are a few irritants as described else-where in this review. Excellent brakes - The ABS is very effective and the stopping power of the vehicle is awesome. There has been many occasions where I have felt unsafe after hard stopping as the vehicle following me may rear end me if his/her brakes are not as good as mine. Audio Unit is reasonable and acoustics inside the vehicle are basic.

      What Can Improve

Build Quality, especially certain plastic covers around the steering column and door rubbers could be better. Rear seating leg room could have been better (increased by around 5 inches for forward facing third row seats). The main improvement that the scorpio needs immediately is eo the automatic transmission. The vehicle can be called a Beast (a good beast) on our roads for its performance, but it can also be a Beast (a bad beast) when it starts hunting for gears during spirited city or highway driving. Linear acceleration is great in terms of gear changes, but should you let go of the throttle during acceleration and depress it again, you will find the beast hunting.... for the right gear. The dealer service can be more genuine as they intentionally keep your vehicle longer than actually required, even for minor works. The paperwork after any work done (like a headlight bulb replacement) can easily take between 30-45 minutes. This may not be a vehicle issue but certainly is related as the vehicle owner is subjected to this slow process because of the Scorpio. Acoustics inside the vehicle could also be improved as audio sound can be heard outside (especially from the rear boot door side).

Overall vehicle performance and build quality is good. A cheap and very functional SUV with a number of creature comforts. My 4 year / 120,000 km affair with this vehicle has been very satisfying. With the Automatic transmission glitches hopefully removed (new automatic Scorpios come with an automatic transmission from Bosch unlike mine), this would be one of the best true SUV's in the sub 15 lakh category. Happy motoring to anyone who decides to go for a Scorpio AT.

        Whats Good

Now I dont see any good in the product. I had put in seven years of my life to fixing the car, when I finally learnt that there was no chassis number embossed on the car. I am lost on this. My complaint is more explained here, https://t.co/V8pq89v3H4 Please be aware on buying the low cost innovation products from Mahindra Automobiles. Your family's safety should be prime nothing else, as per me. Plus its your hard earned money. It should be spent on something which has accountability. The vendor should have some rational explanation to the issues to its product. I agree everything cannot be bullet proof. But there is no excuse for incompetency.

        What Can Improve

Well its upto the Vendor, they should ensure the basic Quality Control. Plus there was no way I could find out from the manual where the chassis number is embossed. I always believed the wrong people.

Re Scorpio, there is no problem such as mileage or any technical issue. but its not that much comfortable than honda crv or any other car. in terms of bad roads it jumps very badly. so test drive on bad roads before you buy it. if it suits u then its good. its a real suv, very rough n tough car. go for it.

I have been using Scorpio VLX fully loaded for past one year, enjoyed every moment of owning it....Great on Indian roads, especially the bad ones. You may find the quality of fit and finish a wee bit lower than a Toyota product but, rest is best for a owner driven vehicle. Infact my dad who is 65 yrs old prefers my scorpio to his santro even for city driving...if you are ready to wait a few more months then you will have some more options in Toyota Fortuner and the Skoda Yeti...

I drove the Scorpio AT yesterday. It is excellent just like manual scorpio but without problem of changing gear. That ways scorpio at is the most convinient suv to drive in heavy traffic and or long drives. Automatic transmission has a lot of advantages. One significant advantage is also that it is more fuel efficient than manual transmission. with micro hybrid, it can save a lot of fuel for the driver.

I am a scorpio owner and i have to say that i am totally and completely satisfied with this product. This car which comes in the SUV section in the Indian market has great potential in it and has satisfied me to the core. The scorpio has a great turning radius which outclasses the innova, safari, and other such car in this category. The body is strong and not delicate and is a much more reliable car than many others available in the Indian market today. Coming to the fuel consumptionm part, i have to say that it gives u a better mileage seeing the conditions of the roads today here in India. The Scorpio has a great engine and so a good pick up. The run it has on highways is also tremendous. In terms of other vechicles as far as the speed part is concerned these vechicles have a weak link, that is when they touch a speed of more than 120 Km/ph they tend to shake or vibrate a lot which is not the case here with the Scorpio. With a Scorpio when driving in a highway and in times of overtaking, you dont have to think twice to do that mannouvre as it takes on the road in a smooth and efficient way unlike the innova which is a bulky car and the driver faces difficulties in doing such mannouvres. When in times of an accident (major or minor) the Scorpio tends to have a lot of safety measures plus it has a strong body unlike innova and tavera which even with a small hit gives an impression of a huge damage to the car's outer body as its very delicate, but for Scorpio that is not the case and i have also experienced the way the service stations act in times of servicing your car and they are really helpful and fast and they are not like the other service stations which sometimes mistreat their customers by wasting their precious time and money. The price of a Scorpio is also reasonable comparing the same with an innova or tavera as the Scorpio gives you a better performance meter reading than the others and these cars also cost a lot as compared to a scorpio. Mahindra is following one important rule in customer saticfaction by giving them good treatment and also by leading them in the right way. To conclude this review of mine the scorpio is worth every penny you spend and gives you a smile with satisfaction.

I had a scorpio which was excellent. The only problem is the rear AC which is situated below and literally freezes the legs. I do not know why mahendra has not taken care of this problem which is a common complaint of all scorpio users.
