      About Skoda Yeti

      Summary

Skoda is renowned brand in the automotive industry and is admired for producing rugged and power-packed vehicles. Right after the launch of Skoda Yeti facelifted version, the automaker introduced the Zeal edition. Skoda Yeti has created its demand because of unprecedented performance, sturdy exteriors and stylish interiors.

Further to this, read Skoda Yeti Road Test details by our expert.

      Exterior

The latest version comes with some upgrades in terms of its exteriors; however the body structure is still the same as its old version. On the contrary, the 'Zeal Edition' has seen upgrades in interiors only and the exterior design remains the same. The front facade features a redecorated radiator grille with the butterfly radiator design signature. An aggressive and sleeker design has been given to the headlight cluster which has bi-xenon headlights and LED daytime running lamps. The rugged front bumper comes in black colour protective cladding. It has a huge air duct and is also fitted with dynamic fog lights. The side profile has also seen refinement in terms of designer fenders and tweaked window sills. The door handles along with B pillars are painted in body colour whereas the A, C and D pillars and wing mirrors come in black colour. What makes this vehicle even more desirable is its roof top which comes in non-body colour. The side is also garnished with protective strips along with turn indicators. The rear is accompanied by a wide windscreen with a high mount third brake lamp. Additionally, the dual tone colour rear bumper comes with a silver painted guard.

      Interior

A few months ago, Skoda introduced the facetlifted version of Yeti in India. This time the automaker has announced the brand new 'Zeal Edition' trims in the market. The new trims have their interiors in black colour which are further accompanied by chrome accents. The cabin is very spacious and comes fitted with well-cushioned seats which are covered in premium black leather upholstery. The new variant sports attractive look with the black accents door panels on them. All the existing variants of Skoda Yeti have wooden interiors with a touch of chrome inserts. However, this is the case missing in the newly launched trims. Its dashboard features various elements including an advanced touchscreen infotainment system. Other features include an instrument cluster with a multi-information display. The display system alerts driver about information related to speed, fuel gauge, tachometer and other notification lights. The classy three spoke steering is the main highlight of the interiors and is covered with leather upholstery and has multi-functional switches.

      Engine and Transmission

A 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine is equipped in all the trims including the 'Zeal Edition'.The high pressure direct-injection technology and liquid cooling system ensures decent fuel efficiency. The turbocharger with self-aligning blades of this engine is capable of producing a maximum power of 108.5bhp along with a peak torque output of 250Nm. The 4x2 trim of this vehicle is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission gearbox that transmits the power to the front wheels. On the contrary, the 4x4 version is integrated with a slightly powerful mill. This trim comes fitted with liquid cooling system that delivers a superior power of 138bhp with a peak torque of 320Nm. The torque output is automatically delivered to all four wheels in 4x4 layoutswith the help of a 6-speed manual transmission gearbox.

      Performance and Handling

The 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine of the 4x4 trims works in collaboration with a 6-speed manual transmission gearbox. This can breach the 100 Kmph speed mark from the scratch in just 10.3 seconds. Further, it can reach up to a maximum speed of 180 Kmph. The 4x2 version along with 5-speed manual transmission gearbox can push the engine up to a top speed in the range of 185 to 190 Kmph. Moreover, it can break the 100 Kmph speed mark in approx. about 11 to 12 seconds.Coming to the efficiency, the 4x2 version has a potential of delivering maximum mileage of 17.72 kmpl. The 4x4 version offers a peak mileage between 15 to 17.67 Kmpl. Not to forget, the direct rack and pinion based electro mechanic power steering system offers a minimum turning radius of just 10 meters.

      Braking System

A proficient hydraulic dual-diagonal circuit vacuum assisted braking system is incorporated in this trim. For enhanced braking mechanism, anti-lock braking system (ABS) along with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and hydraulic brake assist system is skilfully mated in this variant. This is not just from the vehicle;it comes with traction control programs, electronic differential lock, anti-slip regulation and direct steering recommendation. The hill descent control and drive-off assistance make it quite an off-roading vehicle. A McPherson strut suspension with lower triangular links and torsion stabilizer is fitted at the front axle. On the other hand, the rear axle comes with multi-element system having three transverse links and one longitudinal.

      Mileage

The 1968 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 15 kmpl in city and 17 kmpl on highways.

      Safety Features

The vehicle comes inclusive of a lot of sophisticated safety features which offers unprecedented protection to occupants and the vehicle as well. The damage percentage is minimal in case of a collision as the vehicle is equipped with eight airbags including dual front and side as well as curtain for front and rear. Additionally, the Skoda Yeti has restraint systems which include front seatbelts with pre-tensioner, detection system with seatbelt warning light for front passenger, height adjustable head restraints and ISOFIX child seat mounting. This is not enough for the power-packed Yeti as it also has an engine immobilizer with security code. It restricts unauthorized entry to vehicle.

      Verdict

The Skoda Yeti is a luxurious and power-packed vehicle. It has got reliable suspension mechanism and proficient safety measures which make it quite an off-roading vehicle. Lack of navigation system and low ground clearance are the disadvantages that the vehicle comes with.

Skoda Yeti is the most under-rated SUV in India

        10/25/2013 14:46:42 | Alexis Gilani

        Whats Good

The Skoda Yeti Elegance 4x4 is a compact SUV but big on space, excellent pick-up and road-holding and couldn't be better on fuel efficiency. It's build and safety features leave most other SUVs in a similar price range far behind.

        What Can Improve

The boot space is small. The touch-screen display is nothing more than a CD player and a radio; it should have included a Sat. Nav at the price the car sells for in the higher-end model.

The Skoda Yeti leaves very little else to be desired in its class of vehicles. I would definitely look forward to the automatic version in India.

Most practical all-purpose car for today's lifestyle

        08/26/2013 15:42:30 | Subhashish Sarkar

        Whats Good

Compact exteriors with enough interior space for 5 adults. Super-efficient and powerful diesel engine. Sophisticated 4x4 system to keep car and passengers out of harm's way in most situations. Terrific handling minus typical body-roll associated with SUV designs make it a joy to drive. Packed with passive and active safety features that make it one of the most secure places to be in on the road (rare 5 Star Euro NCAP rating!). Impressive ICE (In-car-entertainment system) and clever Varioflex seating system that can adapt to most kinds of seating and luggage requirements.

        What Can Improve

Priced too high for it's perceived size. Many find the looks oddball, but I find it unconventionally good-looking. Slightly more ground-clearance for better off-roadability. Better headlamps (the original projector lamps in the Euro-spec models would be better). Sportier colours.

Skoda have just revealed their 2014 facelift for the Yeti. Looks like they pandered to popular demand and took off the oddball looks of the original monster and tamed it down to more generic Skoda/VW silhouettes. I prefer the current uniqueness, but maybe generic looks will curry more favour with the crowds. For a small-family city-dweller, you need nothing more than the Yeti. With it's pragmatic size, security features, go-anywhere ability, low maintenance (once every 15,000 kms, or roughly twice a year @ 10k/service is comparable to any other brand out there. Sometimes actually cheaper), frugal engine, you don't need much more car than this unless you are routinely into bullying other road-users. Plus, its oddball looks don't make it a car-jack magnet.

        Skoda Yeti Performance Drive Covered

        04/27/2012 13:55:50 | Prajin Ravindran

Here is the story of my experience when I walked into the Skoda Yeti performance Drive that took place in Bangalore. To my surprise I happened to meet Mazdayar Vatcha, the icon known for his passion for racing. Mazdayar has won many (reiterated to all) race events you can name in India: such as, Motocross, Dirt tracks, Hill Climbs, Autocross, Circuit Racing, Bike Rallies, Go-kart, Go-kart Endurance, Formula Car Endurance, Drag Racing. He also has a record of 243kmpl in the Mileage Challenge. Before my drive, Yeti had not made a good impression on me. But there was something else to follow and I want to share my experience at the Yeti performance Drive along with Mazdayar Vatcha. Skoda Yeti performance Drive is the second event to happen in Bangalore, the first one was held at Chennai. The main focus of the event is to spread awareness of the blend of technology and design used in Skoda Yeti. Artificial course/track was made to display the incredible power and performance as the Yeti tackles the obstacles in front and surprises you. Initially came the obstacle to test the drive system, Yeti is basically a 2WD which is efficient, however, we might all be or will be in a situation which where you notice wheel slippage in your car tyre, when it is stuck in a quick sand or up on a rock, the Yeti is built with a hidden 4X4 technology, which comes into action and avoids the wheel slippage in those situation. The second obstacle was the parking zone, Yeti's parktronic feature which assists you when parking in just a push of a button. Following this, the maneuvering zone, the amazing part is Yeti, an SUV, manages to do a turn with the minimum turning radius of just 10 meters, which is very comfortable in handling and maneuverability in city driving. Consecutively, lighting system on the bumpers, the two fog lights type lights, also act as corner lights when you turn the steering towards left/right at night which helps you improve road vision at night. furthermore, The Hill Climb Ramp, I would be a more specific here, there are two ways to go about it, the Hill Hold and Hill Descent features of the Skoda Yeti. Hill Hold Control (HHC), Uphill drives are a difficult part of any journey. The Yeti's Hill Hold Control feature makes sure you maintain maximum control over your vehicle when climbing uphill. In this feature, the vehicle automatically keeps the brake active for at least 3 seconds just after you release it, so that the vehicle doesn't start to roll back, giving you ample time to engage the accelerator and drive up the slope effortlessly. Descent speed Regulator (DSR) also called the Hill Descent Control (HDC), with this feature; a constant speed is maintained when driving downhill by means of automatic wheel braking. Thus, you can focus only on steering the vehicle down the slope, making the task much easier. Final but not the least is the ABS/EBD test, which is simply stunning. The Anti-Lock Braking System adjusts itself in off-road mode and enhances control and handling of the vehicle on slippery surfaces. Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) electronically adjusts the amount of brake pressure to the front and rear wheels, resulting in smoother braking and an improved driving experience. This section was a true surprise which coughed out my heart when ABS and the EBD actually was experienced. The Skoda Yeti packs a strong 2.0 litre TDI CR, 16V DOHC engine. This diesel powertrain is capable of producing maximum power of 140bhp at 4200 rpm and returns top torque of 320 Nm at 1750-2500rpm. When I walked out of the performance Drive, it was lot of amazing moments which Yeti had in its small package which changed my impression of Skoda Yeti. It is worth to say that "Big surprises come in a small package"
