Yamaha has recalled the YZF-R1 and the YZF-R1M. A total of nine units are affected by this recall in India. This is part of a global recall that concerns possible failure of the new R1 transmission. Yamaha has said that the first and second gears might seize under hard riding like on a race track. There’s no quick or easy fix to this problem as Yamaha technicians would need to strip open the engine t change the affected parts.
According to Ravinder Singh, Vice President, Strategy & Planning, Yamaha Motor India Sales, “No such problem has been reported from anywhere in India so far. But for the safety of our customers, we have announced this recall”. The company plans to commence the voluntary recall as part of a factory modification campaign that will be run through authorised superbike dealerships across the country. Singh further added "We will be rectifying the error by replacing the transmission with a modified one free of cost”. Yamaha will contact each R1 and R1M owner individually via email and phone calls to fix an appropriate date to carry out the replacement.
