About Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II
Summary
Every unit of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is handmade in Goodwood, England. Luxury and attention to detail is what the company is known for. Ghost Series II is a rejuvenated version of the previous one and is made for millionaires around the world. The car is an epitome of luxury inside out, and if you see one on the road, you will keep watching till it is out of sight. It got its name because it does not make any noise on the road; it travels like a “ghost” and shuts the world outside for the person sitting inside it.
Rolls-Royce looks to exploit the increasing wealth of Indians, and the increasing number of “Richie Rich” in wthe country makes it a lucrative market for the company. The company has been synonymous with luxury since 1904, and the previous version of this car was one of the favourites of Maharajas. “Silver Ghost” was produced from 1906 to 1925 and one of the original cars was insured for US $35 million in 2005, which is rough₹ 225crores. Intoday exchange rate. Currently owned by the German automotive giant BMW, Rolls-Royce offers five models in India including the 2010 Ghost. Phantom, Phantom Coupe and Drophead Coupe are the other models.
Exterior
With that hefty price tag come some amenities. You can get your beloved Ghost painted in a bespoke colour that the company will never use in any of its cars. But, this add-on is not for free. You will have to shell out ₹nine lakhs for the unique paint job. “Spirit of Ecstasy”, the company’s mascot since 1910 is usually made of stainless steel, but you can get it in pure gold for ₹ten lakhs. The car has the trademark grille of the company and headlights with automatically adjust according to the oncoming traffic so that their visibility is not compromised. Hood is elevated, and you can give it a different color than the rest of the car. You can upgrade standard 19-inch wheels to 21-inch. Classic coach doors have been installed in this one so that it looks no different than its intimidating sibling “Phantom”. Twin exhaust pipes are placed under each taillight but do not make much of noise. Interestingly, the boot opens with a slight foot movement and can be controlled from inside too.
Interior
The car comes with exquisite interiors, and you can get the leather of your choice in this one. Visit their official website and try to configure a Ghost II and you will surely be spoilt for choice. The buyer will decide the colour of interiors and wood used on the dashboard. Behind each front seat, there are monitors that can be used for entertainment. Steering mounted buttons could be used to control the audio system, and a smart screen on the dashboard controls various mechanism of the car. The driver is aided by a heads-up display system that gives a mirror reflection of the dashboard on the front window. Ventilated and massage seats come as an option, and there is an exclusive analoguenear the steering wheel. Ghost II has been equipped with an infrared camera that can detect any pedestrian up to 300 m; also, the exterior cameras give a 360-degree view. The interiors of any Rolls-Royce car is what other luxury car makers take inspiration from, but no one has been able to it better than the folks in Goodwood.
Engine and Transmission
The car is fitted with an 8-speed automatic gearbox that is assisted by GPS system. It changes gears automatically according to the road ahead so that you do not feel athing inside it. Equipped with a massive 6.6 liter V12 engine that produces 563 bhp and 780 Nm of torque, its power output is more than the first Ferrari 458 Italia.
Performance and Handling
Though it beats a Ferrari in power output but cannot match it in terms of performance because it weighs around 2.5 tons. Despite its weight, it manages 0-100 kph in 4.9s, and the top speed is limited to 250 kph. There will body roll because of the size of this thing, but you will hardly feel a thing inside because of the way it is designed. Ghost II floats over the tarmac and absorbs most of the hiccups but might struggle in Indian conditions because of the challenging terrain our roads offer.
Braking System
It comes with modern brake assist system that applies full brakes on all four wheels every fraction of a second. The car has electronic traction control and is equipped with ventilated disc brakes.
Mileage
The 6592 cc Petrol - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 8 kmpl in city and 10 kmpl on highways.
Safety Features
As mentioned earlier, it has infrared cameras that detect pedestrians up to 300 m and informs the driver about the same. The steering wheel vibrates if the driver has not indicated a turn. The car has multiple airbagsand gets saferas it gets along.
Verdict
This one is for the businessman who is most of the times accompanied by a chauffeur but sometimes likes to take the steering wheel in his hands. One of the most comfortable cars that the world currently has and also one of the most expensive, the car seems to be a little over priced. But, Rolls-Royce has put a ₹ 4.70 crore price on this one because they know their potential customers very well.
Competition
There was a time when a roller was alone ranger and in a league of its own. But today its gets stiff competition from other manufacturers. Its British counterpart Bentley’s Continental and Mulsanne and its parent company’s German rival Mercedes’ Maybach fall in the same territory as Ghost II.
