Summary
Ashok Leyland is an Indian automobile manufacturer, which is based in Chennai, India. It is the second largest commercial vehicle manufacturer in the country and 4th largest manufacturer of buses in the world. Founded in 1948, Ashok Leyland is also the 16th largest manufacturer of trucks globally. The company also develops spare parts and engines for industrial and marine applications.
In 2007, Ashok Leyland announced a joint venture with the Japanese auto giant - Nissan. Both makers share the Renault-Nissan manufacturing unit in Chennai, India. The company also started working on the passenger cars and introduced the Stile MPV in the country. This MPV is basically a re-badged version of the Nissan Evalia MPV.
Indian Operations and Executive Managements
Mr. Vinod K. Dasari, Managing Director, Ashok Leyland is responsible for all the operations. The other key people to company are T. Venkataraman, Sr. Vice President, Global Buses and Mr. K. Ram Kumar, Vice President Corporated Finance.
Ashok Leyland has six manufacturing units in India including Ennore, Tamil Nadu in North Chennai (for Trucks, Buses, Engines and Axles), Hosur in Krishnagiri District near Tamil Nadu (for Trucks, Special Vehicles and Power Units), Alwar Rajasthan (for Bus Manufacturing), Bhandara, Maharashtra (Gerbox unit) and Pantnagar Uttarakhand (Cabs and new generation platforms). Its Sengadu vilage, Kanchipuram District in Tamil Nadu was established in 2008 and the facility produces Ashok Leyland Defence Systems.
The company also has production facilities in Sherburn-in-Elmet (North Yorkshire) Great Britain for Optare Bus and Letnany in Prague, Czech. The company has its technical centre at Vellivoyalchavadi in the outskirts of North Chennai near Minjur. This centre has modern test tracks and component test labs.
Products & Services
Ashok Leyland has a large dealership network spread across urban, semi-urban and rural regions of the country. The company has more than 500 outlets in the country. Ashok Leyland Defence Systems is a new company by the Hinduja Group. The company is designing and developing defence logistics and tactical vehicles, defence communication and other systems. It is also the largest supplier of logistics’ vehicle to the Indian army.
Environmental Initiatives
Ashok Leyland is continuously working on different technologies to offer environment friendly vehicles to buyers in India. The company is focussing on improving fuel efficiency without affecting automotive power. The home-grown automaker also develops electric batteries and bio-fuel modes. At the 2008, Ashok Leyland introduced iBus as part of the future for the increasing traffic in the major cities. The iBus is a Rs. 6-lakh, low-floor concept bus for the metros. This low-floored vehicle features anti-lock braking system, electronic engine management and passenger infotainment. It is equipped with wide LCD screens, reading lights, audio speakers and Internet. The iBus features the company's innovative hybrid technology.
Talking about passenger cars, Ashok Leyland is yet to introduce the hybrid cars in the country, but it is expected that new Ashok Leyland cars in India will get alternate fuel options such as electric or hybrid.
Founder & First Car
Ashok Leyland was founded in 1948 by a freedom fighter from Punjab - Mr. Raghunandan Saran. After Independence, he was convinced by India's first Prime Minister JawaharLal Nehru to invest in modern industrial venture. Ashok Motors was assembling and manufacturing Austin cars from England, and the company was named after the founders’ son - Ashok Saran. Headquarters of the company are situated in Rajaji Saalai, Chennai, while the production plant is in Ennore, a small area in the North of Chennai. The company was assembling and distributing Austin A40 passenger cars in India.
In 2007, the company joined hands with the Japanese auto giant Nissan to share a common manufacturing facility in Chennai India. The first Ashok Leyland car in India is Stile MPV, which is based on the Nissan Evalia MPV.
USP
Backed with huge dealership network, it is easy for customers to buy Ashok Leyland cars in India. The company is also manufacturing the Stile MPV in the country, which helps it price it quite competitively.
Resale Value
