Volvo XC90 Review

Volvo makes one of the safest cars to run on roads and when they built a full-size SUV, it was a hit. Though termed boring, the SUV became one of the most popular family cars in European and American markets. It took Volvo 12 years to go back to the drawing board and start building a brand new XC90, the one that would define the way every new Volvo would look like.

Unveiled at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, the second generation XC90 is claimed to be the safest, and most economical and luxurious car in its league. The new SPA platform is lighter, stronger and safer than that of the old XC90. It now rivals the likes of Mercedes GLS, Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Land Rover Discovery Sport with seven seats option.

Further to this, read Volvo XC90 Road Test details by our expert.

The second generation Volvo XC90 marks the introduction of Volvo's new design philosophy, and the credit for this evolutionary design goes to Thomas Ingenlath (ex-Volkswagen Group designer). This crossover SUV shares its design cues with the Volvo Coupe concept. The front fascia of the crossover features a prominent chrome trimmed grille, which will also be offered on other future Volvos. The chrome grille accommodates the company's logo, flanked by 'Thor's hammer' headlamps. The T-shaped LED daytime running lights look unique, while the elongated and carved bonnet of the SUV curves back into the car's shoulder line. The strong shoulder line is stretched all the way to the narrowed rear lights, giving the car an aggressive stance.

At the back, the crossover continues with the vertically stacked lamps design. The hatch door features aerodynamic creases that run under the licensing plate enclosure. The flared wheel arches of the crossover have been fitted to eight-spoke, 21-inch 'Inscription' alloy wheels.

Based on new SPA platform, the XC90 crossover comes with spacious and feature-rich cabin. The clean and clutter-free dashboard looks elegant with the centre dominated by a large 9-inch touch-screen that replaces a multitude of buttons and dials. Users have the option to swipe between three main screens - car set-up options, basic car functions and onboard applications. For passengers' comfort, the SUV features four-zone automatic climate control with clean zone air purification system. This air-con system offers individual settings for the first and second row occupants. The second row seats can slide and recline, and there is excellent legroom and headroom space. All the seats can be folded flat individually.

The all-new XC90 crossover comes equipped with an advanced standard safety package that includes a run-off road protection package and auto brake at intersection capability. Auto brake function comes as a safety feature offered with the T8 Hybrid. Moreover, the SUV has 12 ultrasonic sensors positioned around the car which enable the car to park itself in both a parallel and a perpendicular space. Other safety features include multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, side impact protection system, seat belts with pre tensioners, to name a few.

Engine and Transmission

The new Volvo XC90 crossover SUV is powered by a 2.0-litre twin-turbo four-cylinder diesel engine that churns out 225PS of power and 470Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the all-wheel drive system of the car via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The power figures aren't very good keeping the competition in mind, but the engine is claimed to return an impressive 17-kmpl of fuel efficiency. It also gets the T8 Hybrid powertrain that comprises of a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine working in tandem with the electric motors to dish out 412bhp of power and a whopping 650Nm of torque. The hybrid setup takes the fuel economy to 47.6kmpl, almost twice as much as the most frugal car you can buy in the country.

  • 2015 Volvo XC90 First Drive: XCstasy

    Aditya Chatterjee | 19th September 2015

2015 Volvo XC90 First Drive: XCstasy Feel Predictably, whenever anyone talks or writes about Volvo cars, the word ‘safety’ features in the first two or three lines as the Scandinavian car maker seems to know it all on how to take care of all the occupants in the best way possible. In addition, they are working on a mission to completel....

In my last para of the introduction, you must have thought that I was stretching it a bit by going overboard with my description of the XC90’s design but it holds absolutely true as Volvo has chosen not to drape its new generation automobile with gimmicky lines of the modern; to make it look like one more in its segment, as they have inculcat....
