honest review about my Toyota Etios Liva Diesel-

10 years ago | Viswanathan Ramaswamy

      Whats Good

I purchased this car (Etios Liva Diesel-Tn-18-U-3013) from M/s. Lanson Toyota,Chennai on 24th June 2013.The dealer is very customer friendly, prompt and I personally rate their service the best.I have driven so far 4100 Kms. The car has a very refined diesel engine. It is very smooth with a decent torque. The NVH level is reasonably OK inside the cabin. The gear shift position is comfortable and operation of the gears are very smooth and precise. The overall engine performance is fine. The upholstery is of better feel and quality. The inside cabin space is very roomier, especially the very spacious legroom with flat flooring behind. The up and down driver seat adjustment is very useful. The power steering is very smooth and best in class. Real toyota quality. The overall build quality of the car is good. The exterior paint quality is decent.

      What Can Improve

The front and rear suspension is very jerky and needs refinement. The overall quality of the plastics used in the car is very average. For a price Rs.7,02,012/- toyota should provide a better quality. No. RPM meter, heat gauge and alarm warning for seat belts which are standard offering even in Tata make cars. Behind there is Only one side reverse gear light. Not very easy and comfortable to get in and get out of the car because of low seating type. The Rear seat parcel tray is straight and slippery resulting in things kept there falling with the slightest braking. A feature less car and cost cutting is very evident.

Look at Hyundai i20 and improve further in features.

Toyota Etios Liva fall on average lines againn from Toyota. before it was launched I expected the price to be ner to 4.5 to 5L on road, But it seems very high. Beat having one of the awsome interiors comes for 5 on road. To add on the basic version doesn't come with power stearing and power windows, whic even a lower end vehicles have these days. Liva cannot beat, It can go on sales only for the few months. It cannot stay in Market unless they improve the quality of interiors, plastics used for the dash boards. Both Etios and Liva will not be consistant compitetior as Swift, or a desire. The Car gets only 65/100. never more than this. Plus point: Only fuel efficiency (bit higher). But thats uncertain, because FIGO was suppose to give 14-15, but one of my friend, best driving, vehicle gives 10kmpl Very bad for a small car like Figo. Swift and Ritz gives 13 to 14 on road.

Frankly speaking, I feel the design of the Etios (both sedan and Liva) are very average and are not attractive at all. There is a lot of clutter in the form with too many unresolved elements. Its too unrefined for my taste and lacks finesse. Even the proportions of the cars are not great. For example, the chrome strip on the bootlid looks 'just about ok' in the sedan but it looks completely out of place in the Liva. The front bumper and grille (with the sweeping design) do not match each other. Somewhere, the design is 'sharp', but at other places it is 'soft'. Overall, it doesn't add up to a smooth form. Very average and unexciting. Even the wheel arches are too big for the wheels (like how it used to be in the Indica). But knowing the average Indian consumer, these cars will be a success, as the Toyota brand name itself is enough. After all, Toyota came into India with the ugly Qualis and made it a household name!

The design of the car stinks. Innova should have conceived a better design. It has the jap eye shape - a literal shape of the eye of the Japanese. The back portion looks like the Fiat Stile and the front grill looks like our old ambasaddor car. The five models offered would make sense only if they have a diesel model. Lets wait and watch to see the performance.

The ETIOS is the most Unattractive model in the Toyota line-up as far as India is concerned.....Of course Toyota Motors is confident of its brand image and brand loyalty would drive the required volumes, after all. On Indian roads it wud be a face in the crowd, but the Toyota marque cannot be ignored. Move over......... Swift,Ritz,i10 and even i20 !!! The real Liva wrestler wud be the up-coming Brio from the Honda stable !!!
