Workers at the Suzuki Motorcycles India factory in Gurgaon have threatened to declare strike after Holi following the suspension of three office bearers on 'unfounded disciplinary grounds.' Union leaders want that Suzuki Motorcycle India Employees Union President Anil Kumar, General Secretary Avinesh Kumar and colleague Pradeep Kumar be reinstated as soon as possible.

“We have had talks with the management and labour department officials but nothing has happened. The workers will wait for about 15-20 days after Holi and if their demands are not met, they will go on strike," said Anil Kumar. In fact, Anil was suspended on March 19 due to indiscipline, while Avinesh and Pradeep met with the same action on February 12 after getting into altercation with supervisors. However, Anil Kumar complained that even though supervisors were also responsible for the argument, no action was taken against them.

Interestingly, Suzuki's top management has not been issued a notice about this strike. Anil Munjal, the Vice President at Suzuki Motorcycle India, is unaware of any such developments taking place within the Union. When asked to comment about the same, he said, “We have suspended three workers, including the General Secretary and President of the Union, for beating up senior officials of the company in February and March. At present a departmental enquiry is going on against them.” Reportedly, the February incident is the third time that Avinesh Kumar has been involved in disputes with management. Other than him, Anil Kumar was responsible for having roughed up a security officer at the plant gate during March. Members at the erstwhile Suzuki Powertrain are to elect new members for the Union on March 24. The three suspended members are trying to gather support from their colleagues at Suzuki Powertrain.

It has been observed that the working relationship between management at Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Limited and workers has soured in recent times. Three workers from the labour union, namely General Secretary Avinesh Kumar, Vice President Parminder Kumar and Organising Secretary Gulshan Kumar were also suspended in 2012 due to indiscipline.
