The new Volvo XC40 has been spotted undergoing trials in Europe. The test mule was reportedly on its way back to the Volvo and Geely’s facility in Sweden, where the brand’s vehicles are developed and manufactured.

Based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, this all-new crossover will be positioned below the XC60. While Volvo’s new products like the XC90 and the S90 are based on the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), the CMA has been developed for more affordable offerings. This platform will also be used by Chinese manufacturers - Geely and ‘Lynk and Co’ for their new products.

As for cosmetics, the XC40 does carry over the design language from the XC90 and the S90. The ‘Thor’s hammer’ headlamps and the grille give it the characteristic look of a modern Volvo. Even the tail lamps sport this familiar look. Under the hood, we expect the XC40 to get a slew of three-cylinder and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.

The Volvo XC40 will be unveiled later this year as a 2018 model. We can expect an Indian debut a couple of months after it goes on sale in Europe. With a surge in demand for crossovers, the Volvo XC40 will be one of the biggest volume generators for the brand.
