Volvo’s all-new SUV, the XC40, was being readied for its global debut on 21 September but thanks to a dealer, its details have been leaked. The new compact premium SUV gets the new Volvo fascia with the Thor’s hammer headlamps and a bunch of powertrains including petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric options.

The new XC40 will be Volvo’s entry-level offering in the premium compact SUV segment and will sit below the XC60 and the XC90. While the all-new XC90 was launched quite some time ago, the XC60 is still in the works and will look similar to the new XC40 and the current XC90.

On the inside, the premium SUV gets all the bells and whistles including the large touchscreen display in the centre console and wireless charging unit for your smartphone. The interior layout is similar to the XC90, but on the sportier side with the aluminium inserts on the dashboard and the body-coloured contrast inserts in the trims.

Under the hood, you will certainly have the 2.0-litre diesel engine that powers the XC90 but in a lower state of tune for the much lighter XC40. It will also get the 2.0-litre petrol and hybrid setups. Since Volvo has already announced its electrification plans, we can expect the plug-in hybrid and the all-electric versions to debut next year.

Scheduled to be launched globally next week, it is to be hoped that Volvo will bring the XC40 to India at least by early 2018 to strengthen its ageing entry-level portfolio.
