As stated to sources, Peter Mertens, boss for Volvo’s research and development, “We have to cover everything from the mass market to an Audi A3 rival with CMA. Volkswagen’s MQB is doing something similar, but we have to push hard to ensure that we can have greater differentiation [between Geely and Volvo models.” The task is said to be challenging as the new ‘toolbox’ of component sets and structural sub-assemblies need to be utilized for mainstream and premium models.

Sources have also indicated that the company may use the new CMA architecture for compact crossover that could be badged as XC40. Apart from Volvo, the CMA model could also be used by Geely who sells similar sized cars under variety of brands in China.
