Volvo, the Swedish car manufacturer, finally pulled the cover from its XC60 Plug-in Hybrid at the North American International Auto Show 2012. The hybrid version of the mid-sized SUV XC60 boasts a 280 hp four-cylinder and a 70 hp electric motor.

Stefan Jacoby, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Volvo, said, "The technology in the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept is as ingenious as it is unique.” Explaining about the performance of the car he said that, "No other manufacturer has succeeded in delivering fuel economy and electrical range on this level in a capable, spacious performance car with 350 horsepower on tap."

The XC60 comes in three modes namely Pure, Hybrid and Power. In Pure mode, the car is powered only by electric motor as much as possible and is expected to have a range of up to 35 miles.

By default the car is always in the Hybrid mode whenever it is started. In this mode, electric motor and gasoline engine work together and offer utmost driving pleasure. When in Hybrid mode, the car is anticipated to deliver above 100 miles per gallon.

According to the designers of the car, in Power mode the XC60 will be able accelerate from 0 to 60 in just about 5.8 seconds. As the car is a plug in hybrid, it will enable the owners to charge it at home.  It uses a 12 kWh lithium-ion battery pack which is positioned under the floor of the cargo compartment. The batteries of the car are likely to get completely charged in 3.5 hours only.

The XC60 is equipped with the latest technology where drivers can connect to the vehicle via special mobile phone application. On this Stefan Jacoby said, "Creating an intuitive driver's environment that always gives you access to updated, useful information is an important part of our product development.” This application will keep the driver informed about when the car is parked, whether the car is plugged in and other such details.

Volvo Sensus infotainment system is also installed in the car that keeps the driver updated on everything and makes the journey simpler and enjoyable. The system enables the driver to see the best and the shortest route. It helps in locating charging stations with access to quick-charging services and also informs the driver about the low emissions zones.

The company has not yet revealed any information about the cost and the availability of the car in the market.
