      Volvo unveils new 40 Series concepts

      Volvo has showcased two new concept cars, which will form base for their upcoming entry-level models. Using the new modular platform, the two cars with plug-in hybrid and pure electric options are expected to reach showrooms in the next couple of years.

      The concept 40.1 is a compact crossover, displaying the design of the new XC40 that will be positioned below the XC60 in Volvo range. The 40.2 concept on the other hand is a sedan, hinting at the S40 that in currently under development. Both these concept use the new Volvo design philosophy with hammer shaped headlamps and large front grille with vertical chrome inserts.

      Volvo hasn’t given out specifics about the engine and transmissions, but confirms that both these cars will have pure electric and plug-in hybrid versions for the European market. There will also be a range of petrol and diesel engines and details on those will be available with unveiling of the production ready models.

      The XC40 will be positioned as an entry-level crossover to taken on the Audi Q3 and BMW X1, while the S40 will compete with the Audi A3 and Mercedes CLA in the lower end of the luxury segment.

      Speaking about the new concepts, Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research & Development said, “By taking a modular approach to both vehicle architecture and powertrain development we have succeeded in leap-frogging many of the players in the premium segment. Our new battery electric powertrain variant opens yet another exciting chapter in the unfolding Volvo story.”
