The demand for sustainable mobility has increased significantly in the past years with constant rise in population along with the scarcity of resources. Efficiency of the transportation system is critical to improve the overall standard of living in cities. The side effects of technological advancements make a deep impact on the ecological balance of a particular region. Use of non-motorised transport, lessening vehicle emissions and improving the fuel efficiency are some of the areas that form the core of this concept. The Indian government has to collaborate with top names in the industry and work as a cohesive unit to promote the concept of sustainable mobility, which is highly beneficial for the society.

Organised by Volvo Buses, this initiative is aimed at encouraging organisations throughout India to participate in the broad area of sustainable mobility. Although the initiative is not confined to any particular field, there are many broad categories that it can be classified into. Some of these initiatives include bus travel to metro & commuter rail, pedestrian safety, urban planning and non-motorised transport options. Ultimately, these projects would be targeted at improving the overall quality of life for residents of Indian cities.

The Volvo Sustainable Mobility Award was established in 2011 with the aim of giving recognition to organisation who have taken practical and progressive actions in providing sustainable mobility solutions. The total prize money of this award is Rs. 1 million, which comprises Rs. 7 lakh and Rs. 3 lakh for the winner and runner-up, respectively. Volvo Buses is strongly promoting this campaign by inviting groups and organisations who are making a positive impact in the field of sustainable mobility.

Potential applicants, including groups, institutions and individuals, can log on to www.volvobuses.co.in to find details and register in the competition. The Volvo Sustainable Mobility Award 2013 is applicable for all general areas of sustainable mobility. But, any team that has direct involvement with manufacturing or operation of public transport in terms of business are not eligible for the award.

The organisers have also laid down a set of guidelines for participants. Final submission of the project, to be done by 10th September 2013, should have a few clear cut parts. First of all, the project should be defined properly by teams, who are expected to state a clear objective for the same. The submission format also requires participants to explain the main purpose behind the undertaking and also elaborate on its scope in the future. Significant previous achievements, future steps and references would be required along with the resume of the applicant.
