Swedish automaker Volvo has been making an effort to bring its new lineup to the Indian market. It began this onslaught with the XC90 SUV last year and will later this year introduce the S90 sedan. It is based on the same modular platform as the SUV and will be their entry into mid-level luxury segment.

Firstly, the Swedish automaker will offer the S90 with the same engines from the SUV which means a 2.0-litre diesel engine producing 225bhp and 470Nm of torque with power going to the front wheels via an eight-speed AT. We can also expect the T8 hybrid version of this car a little later on. It is powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine and an electric motor that together will produce around 420bhp.

The first thing that catches your attention with the car is the Thor’s hammer shaped headlights which are the same units found on the XC90. The face too is similar to that of the XC90 but in a slightly smaller size to match the body style. Moving over to the side we can see a mix of the classic sedan lines and modern design thanks to the sloping rear roofline which flows into the boot section. Finally, the rear section is quite similar to that of the outgoing S80 model but with axe blade shaped tail lamps that wrap around the boot section.

Volvo has given the S90 the same cabin as the XC90, so what we get is the minimalist design which is dominated by the massive touchscreen system which pretty much controls most of the functions in the car. The driver too gets a digital display for the instrument cluster which the entire cabin has been bathed in swathes of leather, wood and high quality chrome bits for parts likes the power window and seat switches. The rear seats, thanks to the massive transmission tunnel, is strictly a two-seater affair and gets its climate zone as well as a centre arm rest with cup holders.

We believe that Volvo will price this car in the range of Rs 60 lakh to Rs 70 lakh which should put it in contention with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6 and the Jaguar XF. It will be launched close to the festival season and is being brought to India via the CBU route.
