Volvo, a well – appreciated Swedish multinational automotive marque, has finished fourth in the list of 'Most reliable engine manufacturers', compiled by Warranty Direct, a British insurance agency. The company has made a study on the frequency with which the insurance companies come forward and cover the repair costs for different engine damage levels.
Warranty Direct's list compares the risk of failure (1 of xx) of all global automotive and engine manufacturers. The Swedish auto major, Volvo stood fourth with 1 failure in every 111 engines studied, which gives an error rate of 0.9 per cent. The top three companies with best reliability in terms of engine output are Honda, Toyota and Mercedes-Benz with an error rate of 0.29 per cent, 0.58 per cent and 0.84 per cent, respectively. The risk of failure of Honda, Toyota and Mercedes-Benz stand at 1 of 344, 1 of 171 and 1 of 119, respectively. The fifth, sixth and seventh positions are occupied by Jaguar (0.98 per cent and 1 of 103), Lexus (0.99 per cent and 1 of 101) and Fiat (1.17 per cent and 1 of 85).
Further, Ford, Nissan and Land Rover round off the top 10 list of 'Most reliable engine manufacturers', with error rates of 1.25 per cent, 1.32 per cent and 1.38 per cent, in the order of mention.
Coming to the worst performers, MG Rover tops the table with an error rate of 7.88 per cent and 1 of 13 risk of failure. The next five worst performing companies in terms of engine make and life are Audi (3.71 per cent and 1 of 27), Mini (2.51 per cent and 1 of 40), Saab (2.49 per cent and 1 of 40), Vauxhall / Opel (2.46 per cent and 1 of 41) and Peugeot (2.26 per cent and 1 of 44). BMW stands at 7th position with an error rate of 2.20 per cent and 1 of 45 risk of failure. Further, Renault, Volkswagen and Mitsubishi complete the list of worst performing engine manufacturers, with risk of failures found to be at 1 of 46, 1 of 52 and 1 of 59, respectively.
