Volvo is looking forward to change the structure of its products right from ground zero. The company is not only looking at a complete overhauling of its products but also a similar boost to its powertrain. It had launched the new generation of Drive-E four cylinder engines in 2013. The launch of the Twin Engine version in the all-new XC90 showed how much benefits it can make from a little difference. However, Volvo is going for a radical change with a three-cylinder power plant. The research and production work have already started and the company is expected to make the three-cylinder engine ready pretty soon.

The new Drive-E three-cylinder engine is currently in the development phase. It is a part of a string of efforts by the Swedish automobile manufacturer to reduce the size of its engine. There was a time when Volvo used to offer five, six and eight-cylinder engines. However, the company has started concentrating on building up three and four-pot mills.

The chief of Volvo powertrain, Michael Fleiss, has said that the all-new three-cylinder engine will be powerful, compact and highly responsive. The engine is set to vary in the respect of outputs right up to the mark of 180 horsepower. There is already a four-cylinder pot from Volvo that is capable of churning out a jaw-dropping 450 horsepower with a turbocharger, supercharger and hybrid assist. The three0cylinder engine is set to become a solid one, growing by the lines of its manufacture. It is all set to be more powerful that the existing ones inn Mini Cooper, Ford Fiesta or Mitsubishi Mirage. The segment is leader is still BMW i8, which can churn out a massive 362 horsepower with its high-performance three-cylinder engine.

It is expected that this new three-pot engine on the line of development will motivate models, which are based on the CMA architecture. Volvo is currently co-developing this structure with Geely, its parent company. The company will underpin it in the upcoming 40 series, which includes a S40 sedan, XC40 crossover and a V40 wagon. Apart from that, it is also expected to feature in the 60 series, including the XC60, V60 and S60.
