      Volkswagens Expansion Plans in India

      Volkswagen, involved in a neck to neck tie with Toyota, has ambitious growth plans. As a plan for its global strategy, it is working on its Indian expansion plans as well. The company intends to capture 20 percent market share in the country by 2012 taking into account growth in Indian auto sector.

      "Our current market share in India is 2.6 per cent and we are looking up to increase it to at least 20 per cent by 2018. According to our company estimations we have plans to roll out five million cars in India by 2018," said Dietmar Hildebrandt, Director (Group Service), National Sales Corporation, Volkswagen India Private Limited.

      Volkswagen has received an encouraging response from the Indian market and is quite serious about it as well, says Hildebrandt. Volkswagen intends to bring more new car models to India specifically looking at Indian customers’ demands. It is also eyeing Punjab as a lucrative market for high-end cars.

      Volkswagen currently has 150 dealerships which will be expanded to 1000 dealerships by 2018. "Our business in India is growing at good pace and we will hire around 3000 more technicians in our plants in the next five years,” he said.

      Volkswagen group is present as Volkswagen, Skoda and Audi brand in India and sells various models in premium hatchback to high end luxury segment.
