The brand new VW Touareg, which has been slated for mid-March 2010 launch, has been spied road testing. According to the spy shots the exteriors have not been changed much but the car is definitely lighter than before. The front is sleeker than before but the rear remains mostly unchanged. The new model may have face lifted interiors and the company suggests that a third row of seats can be offered as an option. It is expected to be powered by the 3.6-litre V6 and 4.2-litre V8 petrol units currently available, plus at least two revised turbo-diesel offerings.

Volkswagen is also developing a hybrid version of Touareg that will have a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 currently used on the Audi S4 and A6, with the electric motor sitting between the transmission and the V6. The diesel variant V10 is expected to be dropped soon from its product portfolio.

The 2011 Touareg will not have decreased length but is expected to grow a few centimetres to accommodate for a roomier interiors and even an optional third row of seats. The car will compete with Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne. It share its platform with these two models and will lend its new chassis to Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne as well.
