The German auto giant Volkswagen, which has a 19.9 per cent stake in Japanese Suzuki Motor Corp, is understood to have chosen Maruti Suzuki’s flagship export model – A-Star – for selling in the global market.

Recently, an industry source quoted as saying in ET, "When VW team visited the facilities of Maruti Suzuki India (MSI), 'A-Star' figured prominently because of the car's global appeal. Both the global carmakers are now discussing how to source the car and how it is likely to be marketed by VW."

On the other hand, MSI Managing Director and CEO Shinzo Nakanishi said while answering a question, "I believe some discussions are going on, but I don't know anything as these are being discussed between our parent Suzuki and VW."

The Maruti A-Star hatchback was launched in the European market in Feb 2009, and since then it has been the flagship export model of Maruti Suzuki in the overseas market. At present, car is being exported to about 100 countries. Where in Europe the car is sold as 'Alto', in other regions it is sold as 'Celerio'. Moreover, the car is being sold as ‘Pixo’ by Japanese car maker Nissan in Europe.

After acquiring 19.9 per cent stake in Suzuki Motor Corp (SMC) for $ 2.5 bn in year 2009, the Volkswagen group is exploring possibilities of synergy in the vehicle development, production and design.
