Volkswagen launched its premium small car Polo in the Indian market in March. The car’s bookings have crossed more than 7300 units so far and there is a backlog of 5700 units which needs to be cleared.
Volkswagen is planning to ramp up the production of the model at its plant in Chakan near Pune. The waiting period for the car has increased up to 4 months. "We are gradually ramping up production, but not rapidly as, we do not want to compromise on the quality. About 50 per cent of the components are localised, so we have to be very careful while increasing the output," Volkswagen Group Sales India Board Member Neeraj Garg.
Volkswagen Polo is priced at Rs. 4.34-Rs. 6.70 ex-showroom, Delhi and competes with Maruti Swift, Skoda Fabia, Hyundai i20 in the Indian market. The company is struggling to meet the demand as its current production capacity is of producing 900 cars per month. Garg also denied rumours of any technical issues with the car that may be causing the delay. "It is perhaps one of the best cars with technical specifications," he claimed.
