Rising popularity of SUVs across the globe has led the German auto maker, Volkswagen to add more SUVs to its global portfolio. Currently, the car maker has only two products under this segment, including Tiguan and Touareg. If media reports are to be believed, the company is contemplating to increase its SUV range to six vehicles by launching four more SUVs in coming time.

Auto pundits opine that currently the global production of SUV/crossover stands at 18 per cent which is set to be increased by 2 per cent to 20 per cent within coming four years by 2018. Domestic market has seen surge in demand for SUVs in last couple of years, hence making India an important market for SUVs. Many auto makers in domestic market are preparing to roll out new SUVs including Volkswagen that exhibited Taigun concept at the 12th edition of Delhi Auto Expo early this year. Based on the Up! platform, Taigun is a sub-four meter SUV, loaded with a 1.0 litre turbocharged, three cylinder petrol engine. In India the SUV will compete with the likes of Duster and EcoSport. Volkswagen will also launch an entry level crossover within next two years.

At the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen showcased the T-ROC crossover that is conceived on the seventh generation Golf platform. VW is likely to position T-ROC below Tiguan crossover. The exhibited concept was powered with a 2.0 litre TDI engine capable of churning out a maximum power output of 184 Hp along with a peak torque of 380 Nm. Besides, these entry-level models, the company is also working on the replacement model of Tiguan that will underpin predecessor of Golf. Tiguan’s facelift will be rolled out in two body-styles including coupe and a seven seat SUV. Speculations suggest that Tiguan facelift is expected to be launched in global market by 2016.
