Volkswagen has already announced its plan to launch five new cars in India in the next two years. The cars that the German automaker will bring-in are the new-gen Passat, new Beetle, a sub-compact sedan, Tiguan SUV and a compact SUV. Volkswagen will enter the premium SUV segment in 2016 with the new Tiguan that might make its Indian debut at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo.
Seen here are the rendered images of the 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan that will be based on the MQB platform, and sport a fuel efficient engine lineup. The production-version of the SUV will share a resemblance with its concept, which was showcased at the Sao Paulo Motor Show in 2012. It will sport an evolutionary design, and borrow some styling cues from the new VW Passat. According to reports, Volkswagen might add a “long-wheelbase” variant (with 3-rows of seats) – Tiguan XL – and a ‘coupe-crossover’ trim – Tiguan CC - to its lineup.
Ditching the PQ35 platform, the SUV will adopt a lighter and more efficient MQB platform that also underpins the new Passat and Golf. Powering the Tiguan will be a new downsized TSI and TDI engines. The VW’s 4MOTION electronic all-wheel drive system will available only on the top-end variants, while the front-wheel drive system will be offered as standard feature.
Set to rival the Toyota Fortuner, Hyundai Santa Fe, Honda CR-V, Ford Endeavour and Chevrolet Trailblazer, the 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan will be imported to India via a CKD route. This premium SUV is expected to be offered within the price bracket of Rs. 22 lakh – Rs. 26 lakh (ex-showroom).
