The new generation of the Touareg has been spotted undergoing testing in northern Sweden for the first time ahead of a probable debut later this year.

It is speculated that the new generation Touareg will take its cues from the T-Prime concept showcased at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show. The test mule under the little camouflage seems to have sleeker headlamps. The grille and side intakes all look inspired from the T-Prime concept. The side is similar to the current Touareg but then at the rear, the camouflage hides the new design of the taillights and the T-Prime style tailgate. The slightly sloping roofline differentiates the Touareg from the other forthcoming larger crossover, the Atlas.

The new Touareg will be based on Volkswagen Group’s MLB platform. The new Touareg is expected to be lighter than the outgoing model. A revamped and upmarket interiors and with feature and the technology-laden cabin is probable as well. Volkswagen would bring the new Touareg with V6 TDI engines followed by a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The test mule, however, had a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine under the hood.

Volkswagen updated the Tiguan just recently. And after the Touareg and the Atlas, several other SUVs are expected to follow in VW’s SUV line-up. The new-generation Touareg is expected to be revealed this year and is expected to go on sale by 2018.
