Volkswagen has teased its third vehicle from the new electric I.D. family which will make its debut at the upcoming 2017 Shanghai Motor Show. The new I.D. Concept will be a crossover-coupe similar to the BMW X6 and the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe.

Volkswagen teased new I.D. crossover-coupe concept

The first I.D. Concept was showcased at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, followed by the I.D. Buzz at the Detroit Motor Show early this year. In the teaser images, the new I.D. Concept follows a theme similar to the previous two concepts with sleek LED headlamps and slender wrap-around LED taillights. There are also illuminated VW badges both fore and aft. The coupe-like sloping roofline is prominent, while in the other image we could see the LiDar sensors on the panoramic roof.

Volkswagen teased new I.D. crossover-coupe concept

The CUV (crossover utility vehicle) -that’s what Volkswagen is calling it - will have an electric all-wheel-drive system which the manufacturer asserts will be “just as impressive in the urban environment as it is on the rough terrain”. Being a part of the growing I.D. family, the crossover-coupe will be based on the specially developed MEB platform which will underpin all the electric vehicles from the Volkswagen group. The German giant promises a ‘long range, equal to today's petrol powered cars’ along with fully autonomous credentials. There are rumours that this crossover-coupe I.D. concept may be called ‘Crozz’ since Volkswagen recently trademarked that name.

Volkswagen intends to bury its diesel-gate emissions scandal for good with a model offensive of 30 or more all-electric vehicles by 2025. The first of the production I.Ds will be a Golf-sized hatch in 2019. Now, although Volkswagen might be contemplating production of the I.D. Buzz concept, it is quite likely the production version of this crossover-coupe I.D. may hit the markets first, given the growing popularity of SUVs.
