Volkswagen India has introduced a new 1.0-litre MPI engine for their popular hatchback – the Polo. This 1.0-litre engine replaces the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated mill but the price of the Polo remains the same with the entry-level petrol priced at Rs 5.41 lakhs, ex-showroom.

The new engine is lighter than the previous 1.2-litre mill and develops 75bhp of power, identical to its predecessor. While the torque output is 95Nm (as compared to the 110Nm of the 1.2), the 1.0-litre MPI, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, offers better fuel-economy of up to 18.78kmpl as certified by the ARAI. On the other hand, the Polo GT TSI will continue to be powered by the 1.2-litre turbocharged TSI engine developing 105bhp of power.

The Polo is also offered with the 1.5-litre diesel engine mated to a five-speed gearbox and gets two sets of tune – 89bhp for the standard trims and 108bhp for the GT TDI. It is sold in three trims - the Trendline which is the base trim, the Comfortline which is the mid-trim and the Highline which of course is the fully loaded trim which also includes both the GTs.

The Volkswagen Polo competes with the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, the Hyundai i20 and the Honda Jazz in the premium hatchback segment of the Indian car market.
