Volkswagen, the largest European car maker, is mulling over the option of launching a new small car in the Indian market below its popular compact hatchback Polo. The company is considering enhancing its Indian portfolio so that it can grab a significant chunk of market share in the country. As per the industry sources, the company has already started working on this prospective small car. The new small car will be company’s cheapest offering in the Indian market.

Recently, the leading business news daily FE quoted an industry source as saying, “Volkswagen’s proposed small car would have a higher local sourcing than the Polo.” As per this source, the company aims to increase the level of localized content in its vehicle to up to 75 percent from existing level of 60 to 65 percent.

The new Volkswagen small car is speculated to hit the Indian roads by next year. However, the timeline of launch and pricing details of this car are yet to be confirmed in the Indian market. After the launch, the car is expected to compete with the likes of Maruti Alto and Wagon R, Chevrolet Spark etc. The car is expected to be shelved in the price bracket of sub Rs 3 lakh.
