A fix for Volkswagen's diesel Passat sedans has been approved by US regulators.  A recall for 84,390 Passat sedans that were sold in the country between 2012 and 2014 is expected to be issued soon.

A similar fix for the 2015-manufactured Passat was approved by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), earlier this year. This recall will be applicable only for the manual variants of the Passat. The recall will bring the emissions of the said Passat diesel cars on par with the current emission standards in the country.

Volkswagen has earmarked USD 25 billion to make amends for the dieselgate scandal, in which the company has been accused of having devised a way to cheat its way through diesel emissions certification testing. Last year, Volkswagen agreed to buy back up to 4.75 lakh 2.0-liter diesel vehicles that had been sold in the United States or offer fixes if regulators approved.

As for India, the emission standards aren't as stringent as the ones in the US or Europe. Nevertheless, Volkswagen had recalled 3.23 lakh diesel cars a few months ago.
