Volkswagen was recently entangled in a diesel engine scam where its cars were found to be using the defeat device which helped them clear the emission tests. As part of the company’s damage control measures, they have offered to buy back 5,00,000 diesel cars in the US.

The affected 2.0-litre diesel engine has been used in the Jetta, Golf and the Audi A3 which were sold since 2009. The offer will however not be valid on the 80,000 units featuring the 3.0-litre diesel engine that have been emitting pollutants over the permissible limits, which includes the Audi and the Porsche SUV models. Back in September last year, the company had accepted to cheating in emission tests for 11 million vehicles that were sold worldwide.

Volkswagen has reportedly agreed to pay a compensation amount for owners as well. The fund amount is expected to be valued over $ 1 billion in addition to the cost incurred to buy back the affected vehicles. With the permission of the authorities, the company might also offer repair work on the affected ones. Moreover, the owners might also get a period of two years wherein they can decide if they want to get the car repaired or sell their cars back to the company.
