The Indian arm of Volkswagen, a world renowned German auto marque, is working towards introducing a new stronger variant of its popular Polo premium hatchback in the domestic market somewhere in first half of 2013. The recent shift of tide among Indian car enthusiasts towards diesel powered vehicles can be regarded as one of prime reasons behind the company's intentions.

The German auto major will be looking to capitalise on the latest fervour, which has been possible due to subsidised government fuel rates and superior fuel efficiency exhibited by diesel run vehicles in the country. The company is anticipated to introduce the new diesel Volkswagen Polo with a 1.6 litre engine under its hood that underlines its power packed performance delivering ability. The big engine will make the upcoming Polo hatch to be one of its kind product in the Indian car market, with no real competitor.

If rumours are to be believed then, Honda Cars India Limited, subsidiary of Japanese multinational Honda Motor Co., has also revealed intentions to introduce diesel variants of its well known brands in the domestic market. Therefore, if Honda launches a diesel powered variant of its premium Jazz hatchback next year, when new diesel Polo had already been launched then it will be a sign of danger for Volkswagen India.

The Honda Jazz diesel could carry a price tag close to Rs. 9 lacs, while upcoming Volkswagen Polo diesel hatch is expected to be launched with a base price close to Rs. 8 lacs in the country. At present, the top end 1.2 litre diesel Polo hatch is offered to Indian consumers at a price tag close to Rs. 7.4 lacs and the upcoming diesel Polo is expected to be expensive by at least Rs. 60,000. Hence, the possibility of a competition cannot be totally ruled out between the yet-to-be launched cars. Further, considering the current demand for diesel models there are great chances for Indian market towards witnessing launches of a number of similar products next year as well.
