Volkswagen India, the Indian unit of the largest European car maker Volkswagen, has witnessed a sales surge of 72.50 per cent in the month of August 2011. The total sales of the company stood at 6,091 units as against 3,531 units sold in the same month last year.

The mid-size sedan Vento and premium hatchback Polo contributed more than 90 percent of the company’s total sales during the month, registering sales of 5,634 units. The Polo model was unveiled in the month of March 2010, while the Vento debuted in the Indian market in the third quarter of year 2010. Both of these cars have been performing considerably well in the Indian market.

The Polo hatchback is competing with the likes of new Maruti Swift, Ford Figo, Hyundai i20, Nissan Micra and Chevrolet Beat. On the other hand, the Vento model is giving a tough fight to the popular cars of its segment including Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Maruti SX4, Ford Fiesta and Fiat Linea.

Commenting on the company’s performance during the month, Neeraj Garg, Volkswagen Group Sales India Member of Board and Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, said, "Despite the current market conditions, we are pleased to be able to maintain our overall sales."
