      Volkswagen India sales surge 244 percent during May 2011

      Volkswagen India, a unit of the largest European car maker Volkswagen, has registered a massive 244 percent jump in its sales in the month of May 2011. The company sold a total of 6,185 units of its cars in the country during the month, as compared to 1,796 units sold in the same month last year.

      The hatchback Polo and entry level sedan Vento contributed considerably in the company’s total sales in the month of May, registering combined sales of 5,889 units. The company managed to sell 184 units of its Volkswagen Passat with BlueMotion Technologies in this month.

      In the period of January to May 2011, the company managed to sell 33,958 units of its cars in India as compared to 32,627 units sold in the same period preceding year.

      In a recent statement, Volkswagen Group Sales India, Member of Board & Director, Passenger Cars, Neeraj Garg, said, "We are pleased with the overall performance and acceptability of our products in India which has enabled us to outshine our last year's sales in five months." He added that the company hopes to continue its performance in the coming months, despite the current market scenario.
