The iconic Volkswagen Beetle is likely to end with this generation. Reports suggest that the German automaker will pull the plug on the bug-eyed hatchback due to lack of demand and possibly to expand production capacity for increasingly popular crossover models.

This generation of the Beetle was introduced in 2011 and has got multiple units. However, even this has not seemed to have helped its cause as its sales dropped from 109,000 units in 2013 to just 64000 units last year.
The Beetle is currently produced only at a single location which is in Puebla, Mexico and exported to all the markets where it is sold. The free capacity will go into producing crossover models like the Tiguan, Crossblue and the production version of the T-ROC concept.

The current car was launched in India in December 2015 and is offered with a single petrol engine and an automatic gearbox.
