Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued draft rules stating that all vehicles manufactured on or after 1 January 2019 need to be fitted with High security registration plates (HSRP). The car manufacturers will have to provide HSRPs, while affixing will be the dealership responsibility. However, manufacturers can either produce or source HSRPs from certified vendors. The HSRP will come with a 15-year guarantee.
The plates get built-in security features like a chromium-based hologram and a 10 digit permanent identification number. A chromium-based, self-destructive hologram sticker is also affixed to the vehicles and it contains details like engine and chassis number, registration number and registering authority. Existing vehicles will also be allowed to opt for HSRPs, but it will be allowed only once the old plates have been surrendered.
