Honda has fallen under the investigation radar over huge recalls over faulty airbags installed in the car. Recently, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had also ordered an inquiry into reasons why Honda Motors had failed to report deaths and injuries that arised due to violent rupturing of airbags. This time around the U.S. safety regulators has called on for airbags document from Takata.
One of the questions raised by NHTSA was whether officials from Honda were aware about Takata's air-bag inflaters that uses a machinery with an “auto-reject” function. The agency has also asked Honda to revert with information pertaining to injuries and death recorded due to Takata air-bag malfunctions and also produce records of quality lapses by the air bag supplier. All the documents need to be presented by 15th December. Back in October, NHTSA had issued a warning for consumers from driving any of the 7.8 Million cars that feature airbags by Takata until immediate repairs are conducted on them.
Since the past 18 months Takata has been in negative limelight owing to defective airbags in Honda vehicles. It was seen that its airbags installed in the vehicle would explode due to excessive force and the metal shrapnel were likely to fly all around the cabin area, the result of which could prove to be fatal to its occupants. Honda as well as its air bag supplier Takata have agreed to revert with full cooperation to the investigation authorities.
